Mariachi Divas to open music series
The Mariachi Divas, a popular all-female mariachi ensemble, makes a return visit to Downey on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the City of Downey opens the free Twilight Summer Concert Series in Furman Park, 10419 Rives Ave.
Founded and directed by trumpet player Cindy Shea in 1999, the all-female Mariachi Divas are making big waves on the Los Angeles music scene.
Mariachi Divas is a multicultural ensemble representing the flavor of Los Angeles and over the years has included women of Mexican, Cuban, Samoan, Argentinean, Columbian, Panamanian, Puerto Rican, Swiss, Japanese, Honduran, Peruvian and Anglo descent.
"Music is a way of uniting our cultural backgrounds," Shea says.
On concert Wednesdays the Downey Museum of Art is open before the performance and the Downey Rose Float Association sells treats.
Upcoming concerts include Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries, July 16; The Wiseguys Big Band, July 23; Polynesian Paradise, July 30; The Side Street Strutters, Aug. 6; The Downey Symphony, Aug. 13; "Yesterday Once More" - A Musical Tribute to Richard and Karen Carpenter, Aug. 20; and The Marine Corps AGCC Band, Aug. 27.
