I was unaware of Cathy Carlson. I guess she was a big Vegas lounge act. She passed away in 2002. Her is her obit.

Lounge singer from late '60s to early '80s

Catherine E. Carlson, a longtime lounge singer in Las Vegas and Reno from
the late 1960s to early 1980s, died May 26 of a heart attack in an Escondido,
Calif., hospital. She was 54.
A native of Ontario, Oregon, Carlson appeared on “The Tonight Show” in the
late 1960s and early ‘70s and on the annual Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular
Dystrophy as a regular for several years. Lewis and Carlson were good
friends and he was her daughter’s godfather.
More commonly known as Cathy, she worked with Lewis, George Burns, Bill
Cosby, Don Rickles and others. She also performed on cruise ships.
Lewis ventured into recording in the early ‘90s with the CD “Cathy Carlson,
Fresh and Colorful.”
She retired to Ramona, Calif., where she was known for her involvement in
community events and organizations.
She is survived by her daughter, granddaughter, mother, stepfather, sister and
three brothers.

I actually like this and dare I say, she puts more emotion and connection into the song than Karen's version. I wish Karen recorded it in this similar fashion. I've never heard of this person before now. I especially like how she changes her voice in the part at 1:42-1:44 (Let Me Beeee The One), I wish Karen had added that extra emphasis to her voice . She does it again at the end 2:29-2:30 and the end at 2:57-2:59

This is far more pleading than Carpenters - that's for sure. I also vastly prefer Don Costa's dramatic arrangement and production to Richard's. After having heard Cathy's, I understand why Richard and Karen didn't quite decide to release it as a single given the production Richard gave it.

It turn out this tune was recorded several times but never actually hit. Maybe there just isn't enough going on with it. I mean Don had Cathy do a repeat on the bridge and it's still just over 3 minutes. I don't know how you'd add to it, though, as it seems a pretty complete statement to me.

Either way, his is a great rendition of a great tune.
