I love reading this healthy debate!
My vote is that I love them both. For different reasons....
I always felt that Ticket and then Close were great standard bearers... in other words, they set the table for the perfection that was 'Carpenters'.
So - when the Tan album came out, it was like moving on to the main course. and as some have said, it really was a beautifully produced piece of art. The group had clearly hit their stride. And after all - it contains my very favorite Carpenters recording, For All We Know. Simple - melodic - and lovely. (Athough, I'd have loved another song or two on the tan album...as others have mentioned...)
So for me, in summary, for the opening act, CTY was full of bravado, variety, and aggression. And for a rich well-produced continuation of their superior quality... Tan continues the magic in a velvety, polished, fine tuned manner.
