While browsing at another website I noticed someone had a download for a "limited collectors edition" on A&M called Gentle Rain, a 2-LP set featuring Sergio & Brasil '77, Bossa Rio, Tamba 4 and Walter Wanderley. It doesn't list the catalog number. Anyone know anything about this?

Yeah - we discussed this ages ago. This was a 2-LP release, using the Brasil '77 moniker, though most of the tracks are from Brasil '66. It's basically an every-other-track Mendes compilation, with the Wanderley, Tamba 4, Bossa Rio and (I think) Jobim tracks mixed in between.

I found a copy of it years ago. IIRC, it's got an odd catalog number. In fact, is this the one that was licensed to Capitol Record Club or something like that, with an SQ catalog number?

Funny - mine looks exactly like that, ringwear and all!

An old thread mentioning it (by wayward moderator, jimac51) can be found here. http://www.amcorner.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1970

When I read the thread subject I kept thinking of "Constant Rain", when I read Dave's post my I became convinced it was somehow the same song since I had never heard of "Gentle Rain".

Did Dave mistype (doubtful) or is the track listing on the jacket actually incorrect?

Brasil '66 selections are a bit obvious but the inclusion of some Bossa Rio tracks is a nice touch. I'm guessing the credit to Brasil '77 was a purposeful 'error' to capitalize on that groups popularity/relevance at the time this was released?

My copy of the album credits Brasil '77 all the way through - even though we know that some of the tracks were earlier and clearly Brasil '66. This is the case in the album centerfold where all the tracks are listed, as well as on all record labels.

Harry noted Dave's artist errors on "Gentle Rain" which is by Bossa Rio and "Watch What Happens" by Sergio & Brasil '66.

BTW, the copyright date is 1972.

NOT doubtful... I think my use of my "cut/copy & paste" went awry...

Got repetitive trying to type "Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66", more times than the other artists represented, so yes, my errors were strictly unintentional...

It seems that ALL are Brasil '66, at least originally....are you saying that some are re-recorded by Brasil '77?

Since Dave won't correct his mistakes, I guess I'll have to! :)

All Mendes tracks were recorded by Brasil '66 in their heydey, but are credited here as Brasil '77, as an attempt to stay "with-it", I suppose.

The back cover has a bunch of circles with flower pictures on a black background. One of the circles has an A&M logo, and the plain text in the center reads "Limited Collectors Edition".

The disks themselves have A&M ochre colored labels with a 1972 copyright date.

Gentle Rain is one of the classics of early Bossa Nova, by Luiz Bonfa (from a pretty lame film).

I have this in the SP-8122 version. IMHO, they could have dropped half the Brasil '66 tracks and included a handful of other A&M Brazilian artists, which would have made it a great(er) sampler.

I have always assumed that since Sergio had moved on to the Brasil '77 moniker, the songs (as originally recorded by Brasil '66) were listed this way to move with the times. Never gave it much thought. And, it isn't the first time this happened during the '66/'77 transition. There was even a foreign version of "Stillness" credited to Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77.

I just realized that since I had all of these tracks digitized from CD on my computer's hard drive, that a simple playlist function in Media Player could be used to re-create this old compilation album.
