herb top 10 poll

this might be fun. (we do it occasionally in the "goddesses of rock in roll" yahoo group that i belong to, for different artists.) list your top 10 favorite herb alpert songs (in order). any era, any song.

the order is important as the higher up the song is the more points it gets. after new years i will tally them and post the results. wonder what single song this group as a whole, likes best?

also list comments if you want. (i'm sure it will be fun reading all you die-hards comments.) (i'm as die hard as they get)

i'll start with mine. (these are the way i feel today anyway.) as you all know they could change at the drop of a hat. (also if you want, i'm doing one on the sergio section too)

1. the charmer (for me, the definitive tijuana brass song. so charming and relaxed and fun and yearning)

2. the sea is my soil (love it for it's complexity. and it takes me to many places. oh when oh when will they release "warm?")

3. the love nest (i think herb alpert's 9th may be my favorite album these days. what a delight this song is. from the bette davis movie "june bride")

4. what now my love (a good example of herb covering a song, and making it all his own)

5. a banda (stunning. stunning and vibrant & unique)

6. bo-bo (deceptively simple. another "charmer")

7. and the angels sing (i love when it takes off in the middle)

8. mexican road race (herb rocks out. so cool)

9. mae (pretty so pretty. and grand. and fine)

10. casino royale (on other days, this could top my list)

2) El presidente

3) Mexican road race

4) Carmen

Merry christmas every one

It's difficult picking just ten TJB songs when there's so many deserving songs. I would like to have included at least a dozen more songs but since it's just ten I'll have to go with these.

David,
getting his 11-20 list ready in case the poll is extended............

I am more of an "Observer" to these fine posts but this one enticed me to actually contribute my .2 worth

4. Wall Street Rag

5. Walk Don't Run

6. Lollipops and Roses

7. Peanuts

8. Lady Godiva

Wow, david, I can't recall ever seeing anyone list "Shades Of Blue" or "Peanuts" or "In A Little Spanish Town" in a top ten list before. That's not to say that there's anything wrong with your choices, indeed, congratulations on being "original". And my late father would be thrilled with your #4 choice - he just loved Herb's version of "The Wall Street Rag".

I just can't pare my fave-list down to 10, try as I might.

Interesting reading these lists and noticing the number of my own favorites that are not on the lists, like "Monday, Monday."

This is a difficult thing to do because Herb Alpert/TJB recordings have no "throw away" or "filler" material. When you buy a TJB album, you don't get just the song(s) that were the radio hits, but you also get an album full of high quality tunes. So, making a top ten list is just about impossible for me. Maybe a Top 50 or so...

Some of my favorite tunes are the ones that received little, if any, airplay.

Here we go, based on the above comments...

1. So What' New

2. Winds of Barcelona

3. Mexican Shuffle

4. Up Cherry Street (original version)

5. More and More Amor

6. Slick

7. Tangerine

8. Memories of Madrid

9. Abanda

10. Wall Street Rag

I can make more lists just like this one...

This is hard, indeed...i've been trying ever since walt came up with this topic, and I think I've finally done it; at least, as of today. Here goes nothin'[or should that be everything...]...
1. DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART
2. I WILL WAIT FOR YOU
3. WHAT NOW MY LOVE
4. SHE TOUCHED ME
5. THE CHARMER
6. BO-BO
7. SOUTH OF THE BORDER
8. CABARET
9. THE HAPPENING
10. LOLLIPOPS AND ROSES

I noticed that all my favorites, with a couple of exceptions, came from roughly the same time period, late '66-early '68. There waw a 2 year time period in which the TJB could do no wrong, everything was golden. The sound may have evolved a little, but it didn't really change that much. These are songs that I would play for someone who either didn't remember the TJB or was being exposed to them for the first time.

I believe these songs best represent '60's pop music...they're classics that really retain their flavor. As a whole, they're the epitome of the TJB sound.

I must decline to participate on this activity as there si NO WAY to narrow a list to just ten. The ten I pick would depend on my mood at the time I picked them...
