I recently picked up a CD, “Lighthouse All Stars, Eight Brothers” for two reasons
(1) I was collecting Pete Jolly CDs
(2) The Song “Magic Man” was on it.
Artists on the CD: Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Pete Jolly, Conte Candoli, Bill Perkins, Bob Cooper, Monty Budwig, Larance Marable
I’ve listened to and compared Herb’s and Shorty’s version of “Magic Man”. I think Herb’s is better; Herb’s is more of a solo jazzy sound compared to Shorty’s orchestral big band sound. But, as a whole, the CD is very good.
The liner notes that come with the CD are a treat to read. A couple of excerpts:
Magic Man is [Shorty] Roger’s tribute to the courage and dignity of basketball player Ervin “Magic” Johnson.
[Pete] Jolly’s tour de force in this set is Roger’s arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic. Jolly’s two-handed orchestral pianistics make a case for him as a world-class mainstream pianist.
So… has anyone else heard this CD? Have any thoughts to share on the two versions of “Magic Man”?
