JAMBALAYA (On The Bayou)
Music and Lyrics by Hank Williams
This Hank Williams classic, introduced in 1952, peaked at #1 on the country chart by Williams himself, and at #3 on the pop chart, by Jo Stafford. The rhythm track to our version was recorded in 1972, and put aside. In the coming months, our schedule became ever tighter and, as I did not have enough time to listen to and/or write as many new songs as I would have liked, we completed this track in early 1973, for inclusion in our upcoming Now & Then album. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as A&M’s affiliates in Japan, England and Holland culled it as a single and it performed extremely well. In Holland, a bit to our surprise, it became our biggest hit ever.

I read R.I.P. articles of Jo Stafford (Dead at 90). One of them mentioned Hank Williams’s “Jambalaya,”

Has anyone heard this SHM disc? Is it worth getting?

I have an SHM sampler and was not overly impressed on one listen. Actually, it's a two-disc set with disc one as the SHM and disc two as a regular CD. The content is identical, so you can compare and hear the "benefits" of SHM. All I noticed was that the SHM disc was louder, and it sounded compressed and boomy to me. Seeing as SHM is just supposed to use a different material of construction, I guess the record label used different masterings on the two discs to try to make the SHM sound better.
