:) Here is the official press release from the Carpenter Center:

Richard Carpenter Headlines
Top of the World
March 1st fund-raising event for the Carpenter Performing Arts Center

Singer/songwriter Richard Carpenter will perform in an intimate, on-stage cabaret setting at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center as the star of the center's first Top of the World fund-raising event on Saturday, March 1, 2003. The evening includes a lavish buffet dinner, both silent and live auctions, an opportunity drawing, a performance by Long Beach-native Lucy Daggett, and the presentation of the first Arts in Education Hero of the Year Award. All proceeds directly support the Carpenter Center's Classroom Connections educational outreach program, bringing arts education to Long Beach classrooms and students to the Carpenter Center. Tickets to Top of the World are $100 each with VIP tables of 10 available for $2,500 and $1,500. VIP tables include priority seating, "15 Seconds of Fame" and other considerations. Seating is limited to 250.

Top of the World is one of the most famous songs from the Carpenter songbook. Mr. Carpenter will perform the song as part of evening's entertainment, and he'll do so seated at the Baldwin 9'foot grand piano upon which he composed it. Mr. Carpenter has generously donated that piano to the Top of the World event, continuing a history of support to the California State University, Long Beach performing arts center.

In the early '90s, the Richard and Mary Carpenter Family Foundation made a major donation to the university toward the creation of its performing arts center, which was subsequently named after Richard and his sister, Karen, both former CSULB students. That support and involvement with the Carpenter Center has grown over the years. The Center is home to a museum-quality exhibit of Carpenters memorabilia, including a collection of gold and platinum records, the Carpenters' Grammy and American Music Awards and an early drum kit and electric keyboard from their touring days. For the Top of the World fundraiser, Mr. Carpenter will act as co-host with Peter Lesnik, the executive director of the Carpenter Center.

Following the evening's entertainment, the satin-finish Baldwin SD-10 piano played and donated by Mr. Carpenter will be the top item in the evening's live auction. To ensure the most lucrative bidding and the widest availability for this treasured bit of musical history, the piano will be listed for pre-bids on eBay beginning in mid-February. The eBay bidder who meets the reserve with the highest confirmed bid will be offered a complimentary trip to Long Beach to participate in the live auction and complete the bidding process on March 1.

Also performing for the Top of the World audience will be singer Lucy Daggett, a mainstay of the Los Angeles musical theatre community and active arts advocate, accompanied by pianist Eddy Clement.

An opportunity drawing will be conducted that evening offering three prizes: a Grand Prize trip for two to New Zealand or Australia courtesy of Air New Zealand; a weekend for two in Napa Valley with airfare, rental car, 3 nights at a bed & breakfast and tickets to the popular Napa Wine Train courtesy of Jones Travel in Upland; and a mystery getaway trip for two. Opportunity drawing tickets are available at all performances at the Carpenter Center until March 1; suggested donation is $5 per ticket or 5 for $20. The winner need not be present at Top of the World.

Top of the World funds directly support Classroom Connections, a vibrant educational outreach program that pairs the professional artists who perform at the Carpenter Center with Long Beach classrooms, to introduce and cultivate a knowledge and appreciation of the performing arts at the elementary, high school and university levels. Over 30,000 students have participated in a Classroom Connections event since the program began five years ago.

Classroom Connections is administered and staffed by the Carpenter Center, but it relies upon the commitment of school administrators, teachers and parents for its success. To recognize that dedication, the Carpenter Center will present the first Arts in Education Hero of the Year Award during the Top of the World festivities, to a teacher, administrator or parent who has demonstrated outstanding support of the arts for young people.

It is nice to know that you do not have to be a politician to raise human awareness. My hat is off to Richard!

Hoping to Attend Richard's Fundraiser, especially in Karen's Anniversary Year and With Richard Musical Performance -Always Special .... :)

Only Getting Time Off Work And Iraqi Conflict could Scupper Plans ......

Peter...Remembering Previous CPAC Concerts.....

You know, I've been watching the piano on e-bay and so far there are NO bids at all!! Here Richard has made this magnanimous gesture and I just can't believe there are no bids. It has to be a very difficult thing for him to do. I would imagine that piano has so much meaning for him, that I can hardly believe he's parting with it. I do hope there are bidders out there in CA waiting in the wings to pay a good price for it. I'd bid on it myself if I could afford to!!

PJ, are you going tomorrow night? You must let us know how it all goes. Please let us know how the auction goes, too.

A very sad Marilyn, online

Growing up, I was probably just as much in love with Richard's piano playing as I was with Karen's voice. In fact, I learned to play the piano so that I could play RC's compositions. Imagine being able to play those songs on the ACTUAL piano that he used to compose them!!! I would LOVE to own that piano, but sadly, I won't be bidding for several reasons:

1. I can't scrape that much cash together. The US$75,000 reserve price must be at least a gazillion Canadian dollars!!
2. I'd have the money if I sold my house, but then where would I put the piano? I don't think the Salvation Army would let me bring it to the homeless shelter...
3. Even if I managed to get the money to buy the piano some other way (anyone want to buy a kidney?), there is still the matter of thousands of additional $$$ to move it over 3000 miles to my location (I could sell both kidneys, but then where would I find the time to play the piano if I had to spend hours each day on dialysis?).
4. A nine-foot concert grand simply wouldn't fit in my living room. There wouldn't even be a way to get it into my house without knocking out the front wall!!!

I am really surprised that no one has bid on the piano. You'd think that there'd be at least one rich fan out there somewhere who could afford to buy it...

WAIT, the reason none of us can afford the piano, is because we've spent all our money buying the endless stream of remixed, remastered, repackaged and recompiled, available everywhere but America product that Richard Carpenter has been putting out over the last twenty years!!

If it doesn't sell at the charity auction, perhaps Richard will put it in his next yard sale... I'd be willing to take it off his hands if the price were right. It may not fit in my house, but if I got it cheap enough, I wouldn't mind putting it in the garage. I'm sure that my Volkswagen wouldn't mind sleeping outside! :D

Murray
... who actually hopes that the piano ends up with a gifted pianist/composer, so that it continues to make beautiful music...

Now, that's VERY funny, Murray!! I can relate to most of what you said! I, too, wouldn't be able to afford it unless we sold our house, and then I really wouldn't have anyplace to put it. What a nice thought, though, to actually play on the piano that Richard composed all that wonderful music! I'm afraid, though, that the way I play, nothing very good sounding would come out of it!!! :D

And, PJ, you must think I'm nuts! The concert is not tonight, but on March 1st. Are you still planning on going?

Will update All with Further News......

Peter...Decision Time Soon......

Peter,

I can understand your reluctance to travel at such uncertain times. I, too, feel that the USA is, perhaps, one of the safest places to be even though I live in NW New Jersey and my husband works about 15 minutes away from the 9/11 tragic site of Ground Zero. I'm hoping that if the Iraqis try to pull something, we will stop them in their tracks.

Whatever you and your friends decide, I wish you well. Please keep in touch.

At the close of the e-bay auction, no one had made a bid on that fabulous piano.

Marilyn
online, and thinking how sad Richard must feel.

I had the fortune of seeing Richard for the first time in 1999 at Foxwoods Casino; I was 33 years old and after all these "years" of admiring he and his late sister, Karen's, work, it was a bittersweet moment to see someone you've grown up "admiring" and "look to" for inspiration, yet the other half be among the "passed on." I gave Richard so much deep personal credit for the extraordinary strength and reserve of character he obviously posesses and passes on; his loss must be enormous and to follow in Karen's wake of beautiful music and music making, especially with the technological supports available to make it "so real" today, it's as though Karen is still with us.

I wish I could see Richard live out in CA on March 1. Unfortunately,k when I saw him at Foxwoods, arrangements to meet him personally, after corresponding with him for years, fell through at the last moment due to "his new family" and pressing demands of his time with small children at the time. I still, in all my dreams, would love to have the opportunity to meet the person, the human being, RICHARD CARPENTER, who has remained my "idol" and "rock" that I look to for strength. Even after losing my leg in 1987 in an unfortunate situation, at age 21, I moved on to walk again, listening to his and Karen's music as strength...and his model as "my model" for strength to go on despite tragedy.

If you are out there reading this Richard, I wish you tremendous success March 1st and hope that this concert brings a bit of magic and strength to you and those it touches.

If seats are still available, perhaps I could get a flight out. Are there handicapped seating (I'm not in wheelchair, but due to prosthetic leg, the spaces for HP make it easier and more comfortable to sit).

Confirmed I am Attending TOTW Fundraiser 1/3 :)

Several American Friends are also going , hopefully we can meet up at Lunchtime and catch up on news , views etc

Frank -Are you going ? CPAC Have been extra helpful this time , so really looking forward to Fundraiser , especially Richard Concert and Auction of Various Carpenters Items -Will We all be Bankrupt ? !!

Will update everyone on return , looking forward to USA Trip :D

Peter...Packing Up Slowly......

Are there any ONLINE auction sites for these items you speak of? I am out of the LOOP so to speak, as a fan, so trying to "roar" my engines up again to get back into things. What are they auctioning?

Frank

Peter, I'm so glad you decided to go to Richard's concert! Have a great trip (and a safe one, too). You must report back to us all on how everything went. Also, how the piano fared at the auction.

Frank, one of the pieces to be auctioned is Richard's Baldwin grand piano, the one he used for all these years to write all that wonderful music. It was up on e-bay for awhile and bidding closed some time ago with NO BIDS on it at all. I felt badly for him. He made a great gesture that must have been exceedingly difficult for him and no one bid at all. I must say, I was very sad for him. Are you going to the concert, too? As for the other items to be auctioned, no one knows! It's all for a great cause, though.

Keep us posted, guys!!

Back Safely in UK after a great , relaxing break in California.

Will post Review / Views of TOTW and Separate Richard Solo Album News Next week ..... :)

Peter....Really Still in USA ....... :)

Glad you had a great trip, Peter, and that you're back home before any war breaks out. I'm very much looking forward to your review and hearing about the new album. Is this the Christmas album that was much awaited at the end of last year or another one?

Frank never said whether he was going or not. I thought maybe you two could compare notes together, or something.
