i borrowed 20 or so cds from a good friend of mine
and made 2 80 minute elis regina compilation cds.

first of all, notice how many were also
covered by sergio.
and while these are not better by any means
they are interesting in their differences
AND JUST AS GOOD.

elis was friends with jobim
and i believe these are the highlights
but believe me when i tell you
there ain't a dog on either of my compilation.

she's unusual, funny, tough and tender & very sexy.

i wish i could send each of you a copy of each.
i really do.

and there are so many good songs still left
i feel i must make a vol 3 tonight

Magic, Elation, Sadness. All of these describe my feelings for Elis Regina. What a magical performer. So much joy and elation in what she was doing. Gracinha once told me that Elis could never be happier than when she was singing. And, what a sad, sad loss when she died.

Some like her version of Aquas de Marco (with Tom); some don't. I do. Although I'm a devoted fan of Mendes, and love both of his versions of the song, my favorite has to be Elis & Tom. The utter joy, the chemistry between she and Tom is so apparent on the recording, it jumps out at you. Almost as if they have invited us into a happy, sacred moment.

As a matter of fact, I don't know if it's still in print, but if so, I strongly recommend picking up the CD "Elis & Tom". You won't be sorry you did. Then again, anyone who truly loves good bossa nova would find it hard not to like Elis. In regard to your comment below, I agree: she is "unfriggin unbelievable". I couldn't agree with you more.

i should have known.
your extensive knowlege of bossa nova is impeccable.

a quick stop at virgin records here in nyc
showed that "elis & tom" is indeed still in print.
another gem on that album is
the magnificent and sad "por toda minha vida" (for all my life)
recently used by amaldovar (sp?) in his amazing film "talk to her."
what a genius THAT guy is.
and great taste in music, obviously.

also i noticed at virgin, the excellent double cd
of elis' called "20 anos de saudade".
(with 8 bonus cuts)

this, together with "elis & tom"
would serve as an excellent starter set to the unitiated.

What a timely post!

The big splash in the cd shops in Brazil this week is the release of the debut cd of Maria Rita Mariano, daughter of Elis Regina and Cesar Camargo Mariano. The cd is simply titled Maria Rita, and thus far is garnering good reviews, all of which inevitably mention her musical inheritance.

Maria Rita's voice is indeed similar to her talented mother, and her choice of material places her firmly in the MPB category which her mother dominated for so many years.

By the way, Ms. Mariano already has a Grammy! She dueted with Milton Nascimento on the "Tristesse" track from his Pietá cd. That beautiful track won the Grammy for "Best Brazilian Song" last week.

It's so nice to hear from you, Paula! It's been a long, long time!!

Indeed, Rita Mariano is sensational, isn't she? I've ordered the CD and cannot wait for its arrival. Of course, from past e-mails and messages, you know we're big fans of Elis around here. I agree that Rita has a style quite similar to her angelic mother. Couldn't agree with you more, although she does have a style of her own; unlike Liza, who tried to be her famous mother through and through.

In either case, it's great to see you here on the Forum. I hope we see a lot more of you in the near future! As always, you and Jeff constantly amaze me with your in-depth knowledge of Brasilian music. Indeed, we all have a great deal to learn from the two of you!
