This one is an essential addition to your jazz collection. The entire set was performed by Max and Diz with no other supporting musicians -- but none were needed.

Dizzy's complex melodies and Max's percussion gymnastics were so compelling no listener could miss the lack of a bass, keyboard, strings, etc.
These discs were among the very first I ever owned, and I still have the longbox in which they were packaged.

Lots of history contained, as the two collaborated off and on for 40+ years prior to this project.

Two of the original beboppers playing together again! By this time Dizzy's tone was pretty well shot, but Max could still - and still does - groove like no other drummer can. This is pretty much a collection of bebop tunes that both musicians had played over the years and made their own. The fact that this concert was so musical with just drums and trumpet should tell you how great these two gents were at the time. Very solid outing!

I also got a kick out of the interview. I hadn't listened to it in a while, but it was great to hear them talk about the old days and when they first met Charlie Parker. Lots of humor throughout the interview. They were watching an old TV show that they had performed on and neither could figure out who the bass player was on the show. They may have gotten up in years at this time but their minds were sharp. This is a unique release that all jazz fans should look for! 4 stars from me.
