Definitely not a favorite Brubeck Quartet recording of mine. Not that it's bad (I'd rate it as "average"), but musically I still think many of the Columbia recordings outshine this one.

Just got Countdown--Time In Outer Space last week. I was checking regularly to see if it was in print as a CD, but never saw it. When I did finally locate it about a month ago, it was already out of print! :wtf: I did a preorder at Amazon and nabbed it for $11.50, plus shipping.

Yeah, this took me a few listens to before I started to really enjoy it. After hearing those classic versions on the Columbia albums it's hard to hear these songs any other way. I've got this playing right now, so I'll comment more later.

I've listened to this album a few times this past week, and it's not a bad little album at all. As mentioned before we've become accustomed to the classic Columbia recordings that anything else just doesn't sound right. But I think this holds up rather well. The musicianship is impeccable. I love the little humor of Paul Desmond when he starts playing a little bit of "Auld Lang Syne" on "Three To Get Ready...", and Brubeck himself does a quote of "Green Leaves Of Summer" during his solo on "Take Five". The more I listen to this album the more I like it.

The CD version of this album seems to have always been around as well. I don't think it's ever been out of print.
