I wonder if it's just a sped-up recording of Herb's trumpet. It wasn't uncommon to change tape speed to create effects even back then.

Could be but I doubt it. Considering Herb didn't even have his own studio yet and was probably didn't have a wealth of fancy recording equipment. I don't know if Herb can play a pic as it is in a different key and has different valve combinations but there weren't many pop recordings that featured pic trumpets so if it wasn't Herb, they would have had to put some effort into finding someone else to play it. Also they used it in several recordings.
