Hey!! How's it going???? I'm awesome. My name is Chris, I live in Northern PA and am a music lover and LP collector. I have all kinds of genres and all kind of great artists who recorded for many different record labels. I like this website very much and decided to join the forum, since a huge portion of my collection are those of A&M. Any recommendations?

Yes, you need more Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 (and '77).

And you haven't even scratched the surface of the Baja Marimba Band yet. Get with it man! :D

Welcome to the Corner.

As far as Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass goes, you need Summertime, You Smile, The Song Begins, Coney Island and The Brass Are Comin'... And the numerous albums Herb made after Rise, too... The two collaborations Herb made with Hugh Masakela aren't bad either...

Lots of Sergio Mendes & Brasil'66 titles as well as Brasil '77 stuff seems badly needed, too... Get Fool On The Hill, Equinox, Ye-Me-Le, Stillness, Primal Roots and Pais Tropical to complete your collection... Additionally there are a couple albums he made on Bell...: Love Music and Vintage '74 and a few on Elektra, which I also enjoy: Sergio Mendes (Self-Titled) and Homecookin'...

For furthur entries in Claudine Longet's catalog, go to The Look Of Love, Love Is Blue, Run Wild, Run Free and Colours...

And as for Jimmie Rodgers, how can you only have ONE? Troubled Times and The Windmills Of Your Mind should also be added...

The self-titled Burt Bacharach, Woman, Futures, Living Together, Growing Together and the Soundtrack for BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID are also recommended listening there...

The rest of the Sandpipers catalog is nearly completely available on CD, but I have all their Original Albums, still on vinyl... Look for The Sandpipers (Self-Titled) Misty Roses, The Wonder Of You, Softly and A Gift Of Song at your favorite store...

For the best, most varied, Various Artists set, nothing beats Family Portrait as being also the most-complete!

For Tim Weisberg, I have Hurtwood Edge...

As for Chuck Mangione, Mainsqueeze is what I consider his best and I'm fairly impartial to 70-Miles Young...

The Gap Mangione titles I have on A&M are She And I and Gap Mangione!... And I also have Sing Along Junk on Mercury; still can't find Diana In The Autumn Wind, also on Mercury...

The Gino Vannelli, you really must get are: Powerful People and Crazy Life...!

Paul Desmond's From The Hot Afternoon and Summertime are the top-picks there...!

Dave

...Wishing you Happy Hunting and a Welcome to our Forum! :thumbsdn:

Welcome to A&M Corner, Chris! The varied tastes you displ;ay in your A&M collection indicate you'll probably be a prominent poster here. Looking forward to your inputs!

i would say the first 7 brasil 66 albums
are among the best albums ever made

right up there with the beatles or the supremes or the fifth dimension or anybody

I thought sure that walterphil would have recommended the Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 Christmas album...

Harry

oh yeah, gee i forgot
that was such a neglected masterpiece.

(especially lani and karen cooing "away in a manger" together)
and that swingin' bossa nova 7 minute version of "it's the most wonderful time of the year."
sergio was really hammerin' on the keys like mad on that one!

they just don't make em any better than that
sigh

Note to the new guy: Before you get all excited about a Sergio Christmas album, there's no such thing...the above 2 posts are an inside joke from a couple of years back. Carry on! :D

Yes, sorry to get anyone excited, but I know how much walterphil has enjoyed that Sergio Christmas album. It's one of those albums he just can't get out of his head...

Oh, and a big welcome to our newcomer, alonely bull in paradise.

Harry

Maybe Sergio is reading the forum and he'll say, "HEY, reunite Brasil '66 to do a Christmas album...not a bad idea!"

well, i can't see why that couldn't really happen. ol' bette midler is releasing one this year. it seems like a neat thing to do late in your career. (neil diamond, barry manilow, dionne warwick, etc.) c'mon sergio! get the lead out!!!! let herb arrange it. have your people call my people.

Given Herb's last dozen or so albums, I think Sergio should arrange such an album... He hasn't strayed as far from his classic sound as Herb has.

I got some new A&M's

Humble Pie
Eat It (1973)SP-3701

Styx
Paradise Theatre(1980)SP-3719

45's include:

Richard Carpenter

Something In Your Eyes/Time

Miguel Rios

A Song Of Joy (Himno A La Alegria)/El Rio

Jimmy Cliff

Wonderful World, Beautiful People/Waterfall

The Brothers Johnson

Stomp/Let's Swing

I got the new release by Peter Frampton "Fingerprints"

Baja Marimba HEADS UP = good choice! It's one of their best albums. They were really in the groove by the time that one came around.

If you like it a lot, may I suggest you track down RIDES AGAIN and THOSE WERE THE DAYS next. The former is much more Mexican-flavored and includes Julius' version of "Brasilia" (later recorded by the TJB of course) and the latter includes his terrific rendition of Burt Bacharach's "Always Something There to Remind Me," which I can NOT figure out why it hasn't been picked for a compilation yet.

Well, it sort-of has been, on the hard-to-find but worth-seeking-out compilation called THE A&M JOURNEY OF BURT BACHARACH from Japan.
