Last night was the first of a two-evening set with Country Artist Kathy Mattea and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, which will conclude tonight.
Mattea became well known in the mid-'80s for bringing folk and Celtic influences to the genre, especially after "18 Wheels & a Gravel Road" and "Goin' Gone" achieved chart success.
The Orchestra and Kathy's 5-piece band provided great atmosphere on selections such as "Summer of My Dreams," "Asking Us to Dance," "Ready for the Storm" (with instrumental intro), and the much-covered "From a Distance." An unnamed Scottish instrumental was the high point for me, along with the post-concert autograph/photo session. Her gracious personality was an asset to the performance.
A brochure about the upcoming KSO season lists the following dates which may be of interest:
Melissa Manchester on Nov. 12 & 13, 2004
Frank Sinatra Jr. (Sinatra sings Sinatra) on Feb. 11 & 12, 2005
Martin Short (standup & musical comedy) on Oct. 8, 2004
Pam Tillis on May 5 & 6, 2005.
As always, continued community support makes these events possible so ... come on down.
