@TO-Cal Stand Out hed:Starring students Richard carpenter scholarship competition, Civic Arts Plaza Richard Carpenter, the brotherly half of '70s pop singing siblings the Carpenters, knows a thing or two about being a musical idol. "We've Only Just Begun" could be the theme song for Carpenter's annual scholarship competition that honors up-and-coming young dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists. Nine scholarship finalists — three each from middle school, high school and college — will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Scherr Forum Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. Carpenter, who lives in Thousand Oaks with his wife, Mary, will be on hand to honor the winners. Prizes in each age group are $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second and $1,500 for third.
