ARTIST: SERGIO MENDES FEATURING WILL.I.AM
NEW YORK (Billboard) - The multicultural/talented Sergio Mendes, who has cheated time before (scoring a top five hit with "Never Gonna Let You Go" in 1983, 15 years after his initial run of success), has aligned with the Black Eyed Peas‘ will.i.am on new album "Timeless," due Valentine‘s Day Valentine‘s Day. The disc features updated versions of instrumental compositions, with vocals from such artists as John Legend, Jill Scott , India.Arie and Erykah Badu . But the reworking of 1968 track "Yes, Yes, Y‘all," which features a cadre of hip-hoppers, turns Mendes‘ work into a sing-songy novelty bordering on folly. Imagine linking Miles Davis with the Teletubbies: Not only is it disparate, it‘s disrespectful. There‘s a point at which hip-hop stops being artistic and becomes cartoonish and irritating. We‘re way past it here.
