The alternate take used on the 1989 version was probably recorded first.Phil Ramone probably wanted Karen to do another take using a softer, more intimate vocal-and that ended up on Karen's original album. Thanks for the additional, informative, information Mr.J.,
I do appreciate the time and effort expended to 'bring me up to speed' !
It hadn't crossed my mind that there would be so many alternate vocal
takes for every solo track.
Then, again, I completely understand the "Merry Christmas, Darling" scenario,
as "...the lead vocal was re-recorded at Karen's request in 1978.." (From Th Top Notes)
because "...Karen was dissatisfied with her performance on the 1970 record.."(Coleman,page 235).
Again, my ears hear the difference between the various versions. That is not my issue.
The question I have is:
Is the alternate take used on Lovelines for "If I Had You" a version that Karen would have re-cut
because of Karen's dissatisfaction with the version ultimately used on her solo CD?
Also, do differences in recording and mixing technology throughout the various years play any part,
as you indicate " ...Richard corrected many of the production flaws on the original."
Very interesting.
I never cared too much for LGB either. The bridge, least of all....I think 'Little Girl Blue' is the weakest song on the whole album and I never listen to it. Richard said it "befittingly closes 'Lovelines'". I'd disagree, it's a standard yes, but a total sleeper of a recording. A forerunner to the schmaltz that would plague them from the MIA sessions onwards.
Okay ladies and gents.... I just downloaded If I Had You from Karen's LP on my iphone and have a YouTube up with the Lovelines version and am studying it line for line, and can't detect a different vocal! I'm mystified... Can someone alert me as to where some of the nuances can be heard?? Seems syllable for syllable they are the same!
If LOVELINES would have been released in December just prior to the KC story airing it would have sold so much more.
Found this on ebay....there is only 1 issue of Billboard in 1989 available for online viewing and this photo is not there...so this is the only shot available for now....if someone has the Billboard issue with this advert please post a better scan.
