Ranger Heartley secures first stakes score in California Derby
by Mike Curry
Thoroughbred Times
Despite racing greenly in the stretch, Ranger Heartley delivered a game front-running victory in the $100,000 California Derby on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields to pick up his first career stakes win.
The three-year-old Lost Soldier gelding drifted in and out through the stretch but had plenty of stamina in reserve when challenged by 7-to-10 favorite Connemara and Shudacudawudya. Connemara drew alongside Ranger Heartley from the inside and Shudacudawudya rallied on the outside near the eighth pole, but the winner dug in to edge away under Julio Garcia for a three-quarter-length victory.
Ranger Heartley completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.40 on the synthetic Tapeta Footings surface to improve to four wins in nine starts for trainer John Sadler. Owned by David and Herb Alpert, Ranger Heartley has earned $119,440. He is out of the winning Silver Deputy mare Deputy G. G.
Connemara overcame a slow start to finish second, a neck in front of fast-finishing Thomas Baines. Shudacudawudya faded late and finished fourth.
Ranger Heartley opened a clear lead and controlled the pace through an easy opening quarter in :24.20 and a half-mile in :49.90. He raced erratically in the stretch, lugging out toward Shudacudawudya and then drifting back in toward Connemara, but Ranger Heartley battled willingly to prevail.
