GREATEST HITS VOLUME 3

A&M SP-4640

I am searching for track information. Possibly this was an import.

I've never heard that there was a Volume 3 either. This must be a placeholder catalog number that never materialized.

But, even though it probably never existed, we could all interpolate from 1 and 2 what we *think* should have been on 3 and post our lists here.

Harry

Harry's right... It never appeared. One can speculate as to what songs would've made the cut, but this never saw release. Let's move on to the next AOTW...

Awwwww, we're not going to make a list of what we think would go on this "potential LP"?????? :jester:

I for one thing would guess that this would be the LP where you'd get the Non-LP "Fire And Rain" single...!

Dave

Well, depending on the year it would have been released, it could have included a lot of the songs that appeared eventually on SOLID BRASS. When in time would this catalog number have arrived?

This looks like it would have occured between JUST YOU AND ME and the Alpert/Masekela albums.

So it basically could contain anything labeled T.J.B. or Tijuana Brass, except of course for BULLISH.

Harry

The 4600 series starts in 1976 and runs into 1977.

Disco versions and extended dance mixes would have been popular then.

JB

Yes, plus an extended "Talk to the Animals." Each creature would have a verse, similar to the dog-bark version of "Jingle Bells."

I think discussing what could have been included would be a good topic for discussion...

Prior to the release of GH Vol 2 I always considered Solid Brass to be a sort of second greatest hits collection...

I consider the "real" GH Vol 2 to be a bit of a mish mash... Greatest Hits (the first one or "Vol 1" if you prefer) covered the first five LPs (with a few missing tunes IMO). (GH Vol 2 had tracks from all over the place). With this logic, a "real" GH Vol 2 should likely start with "Third Man Theme" and run up thru hits from Beat of the Brass or maybe to "My Favorite Things."

Continuing this logic, then a "real" GH Vol 3 would start with "My Favorite Things" and go all the way thru Coney Island (possibly concluding with a track or two from Just You & Me).

Just my thought or 2c worth... Your mileage may vary.

Uh, oh..., does that mean a 12" extended version of "Freight Train Joe"?

The extended "Shake Your Caboose Mix" (by Badazz and Jellybean) backed with Nile Rogers' "Coast to Coast Pullman Mix"...

So getting back to the Greatest Hits discussion before I interrupted myself with the "Freight Train Joe" joke...

Greatest Hits (Volume 1)
Lonely Bull (from The Lonely Bull)
Spanish Flea (from !!Going Places!!)
Getting Sentimental Over You (from !!Going Places!!)
Love Potion #9 (from Whipped Cream & Other Delights)
Never On Sunday (from The Lonely Bull)
Mexican Shuffle (from South Of The Border)
Taste of Honey (from Whipped Cream & Other Delights)
Tijuana Taxi (from !!Going Places!!)
South Of The Border (from South Of The Border)
America (from Volume Two)
Whipped Cream (from Whipped Cream & Other Delights)
Zorba The Greek (from !!Going Places!!)

Greatest Hits Vol 2 (the way it should have been)
The Third man Theme (from !!Going Places!!)
What Now My Love (from What Now My Love)
Plucky (from What Now My Love)
Work Song (from SRO)
Our Day Will Come (from SRO)
Flamingo (from SRO)
Casino Royale (from Sounds Like...)
Wade In The Water (from Sounds Like...)
Flamingo (from SRO)
A Banda (from Ninth)
Carmen (from Ninth)
This Guys In Love With You (from The Beat of the Brass)
Freight Train Joe (from... oh never mind, I'm kidding on this track)

Greatest Hits Vol 3
My Favorite Things (from The Christmas Album)
Without Her (from Warm)
Zazueira (from Warm)
To Wait For Love (from Warm)
Maltese Melody (from Brass Are Comin')
Jerusalem (from Summertime)
Darlin' (from Summertime)
Last Tango In Paris (from You Smile - The Song Begins)
Fox Hunt (from You Smile - The Song Begins)
Coney Island (from Coney Island)
I Belong (from Coney Island)
Promenade (from Just You & Me)

This isn't based on favorite tracks but rather on single releases. My own "Fave" GH comp would be far different (and would not include many of these nor would it include "Freight Train Joe" :D

--Mr Bill

Yeah, but I never cared for it -- to me it was "Hello Dolly, Part 2." And besides, it's no "Freight Train Joe."

--Mr Bill

Disappointing that "Fire And Rain" couldn't make Mr. Bill's song list for this album...! Guess it's strictly, only available on a '45', then...!

Dave

*Already included in SOLID BRASS.

I picked 14 likely tracks for selection (actually a fifteenth, "Third Man Theme" is a possibility as well, but GOING PLACES had already been picked pretty clean). One could also throw in "Fire And Rain", perhaps in place of "Coney Island".

There were 14 tracks included on SOLID BRASS, so that number isn't without precedence, even though GH1 and 2 each contain 12.

I eliminated JUST YOU AND ME from contention, as it had no hits and wasn't labeled Tijuana Brass or T.J.B. in any way. One could also argue that Coney Island didn't have any real hits either, but the title track fits musically with the above selections.

I suspect the order would have been jumbled rather than chronological, just to continue the pattern set by the first two.

My final thought is that since SOLID BRASS had indeed covered so much of this territory, that that was likely the reason for shelving the project.

Harry

I always thought that Solid Brass made a better version of GH2, but given that GH2 was released my picks for a GH3 would be:

Casino Royale
Mexican Drummer Man
Good Morning Mr. Sunshine
Mame
Save The Sunlight
Winds Of Barcelona
Carmen
To Wait For Love
Slick
Fox Hunt
Summertime
Without Her
Coney Island
Third Man Theme

Most of these had some kind of chart action while "Winds of Barcelona" was performed in concert a lot.

I also question why anyone would want "Fire And Rain" included, being that hardly anyone outside of this forum even knew it existed at the time.

I considered "Winds Of Barcelona" due to its concert popularity, and actually neglected "Fire and Rain" until I reread some of the above posts. I don't know about elsewhere, but "Fire and Rain" actually got airplay on the soft rock station in Philly at the time.
