I heard "Superstar" the other night. It was in the soundtrack of the movie "Ghost Rider" starring Nicholas Cage on the Fx channel the other night. Apparently the character he played appreciated Karen.
We recently moved south to Florida, leaving the snowy confines of Philadelphia for heartier souls. As we drove our cars south on I-95, it was naturally possible to receive many different radio stations.
As we entered the state of Florida, I happened on an NPR station that was replaying the Richard Carpenter/Terry Gross interview. Moments after it was over, I flipped to the AM dial and started a scan, where I found an oldies station that was just starting to play "Goodbye To Love".
What struck me was that the station used the SINGLES 1969-1973 version with the oboe opening. I'm quite sure I'd never heard that version on the air, and it was a nice change. Sure enough, the CD is track-indexed so the track begins with the lone oboe before Karen's first line.
While in Nagahama, Japan last week, I walked into a rock and jewelry shop to hear one Carpenters song after another: "Two Lives," Piano Picker," "A Kind of Hush," and others. Also, the major Japanese airline featured "Rainy Days and Mondays" in thier in-flight entertainment. Gotta love Japan.
The Christmas muzak is in full swing at work - pumped in through satellite. So far from K&R:
An Old Fashioned Christmas
Merry Christmas, Darling
What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?
I'll Be Home For Christmas
I suspect the rotation will change weekly. At least I hope it does because it gets to be a bit annoying hearing the same (non-K&R ) tunes over and over.
All day at work, among the other Christmas stuff, were several by RC & KC. "Merry Christmas Darling", "Sleigh Ride", "The Christmas Song" and "Ava Maria".
On the drive home, heard "We've Only Just Begun" on the Radio, sandwiched between Dean Martin and Perry Como Christmas Songs.
Phoenix radio 99.9 seems to have K&R's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" in heavy rotation right now. Also, Carol Of The Bells. Have heard both a lot. Still waiting for "Merry Christmas Darling". It will happen!
And "The CarpenterS Christmas Stuff" just keeps on comin'...! :bigsanta:
On the radio this time? It was "Christmas Time Is Here"...
--Which I remember being sung by a childrens' choir on the CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS SPECIAL (& it even got played on the radio, along w/ that "boppin' piano theme" (Actually called "Linus and Lucy", by Vince Guaraldi), two separate times) & I remember Diane Krall singing it on the radio & just had to have it--& did on a 3-song Christmas Set, w/ "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" & "Jingle Bells"; it came in a 1999 calender, too...
Dave
W/ Only 18 Shopping (& WORKING!) Days Left! :santa:
Phoenix update...still playing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas and now they've added Sleigh Ride and Do You Hear What I Hear
Still haven't played Merry Christmas Darling yet, my personal favorite (1978)
Sunset Station Hotel and Casino in Henderson, Nevada have We've Only Just Begun and Please Mr. Postman in their rotation (heard 'em twice...I was there a week). Too bad they don't have a Carpenters themed slot machine.
Hmmmmmmm...our Christmas music now seems to be playing TWO Carpenters Xmas songs: "Christmas Time Is Here", although pretty much a rarity, has also been heard, by me, played at my store as well!
Caught the tail end of either "The Christmas Song" or "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" ("yoouuu...") on Cleveland's Majic 105.7. Though it's an oldies station, they never play the Carpenters during the year.
