Whatever happened to Janis Hansen?

She and the rest of the original group formed a new group called The Carnival which released one self-titled album which sounded like a cross between Brasil '66 and the Fifth Dimension (owing mostly to producer Bones Howe, probably).

Beyond that I'm not sure...somebody else might know further info.

From what I read etc. Janis and the rest of the group became disgruntled with the traveling accommodations while touring. I guess Sergio stayed in nice hotels while the rest stayed in 'flea bags'. So they more or less revolted. But Sergio wound up firing them all. Lana Hall asked for her job back and he granted that. Not sure if Herb Alpert had anything to do with that at the time! But in came the newer group with Karen Phillipp replacing Janis. It was a gutsy move to fire Janis, when at that time she had major success with her lead on "The Look of Love".

But I guess no one is indispensable!

Dan Bolton is correct, it IS her. :D

Felt like I found the Holy Grail when I tracked all this down. :D

I love Janis track on the Look Of Love. I love Lani's voice too, but Janis really articulated so nicely on this one. Does anybody know where Janis resides these days? Is she married with kids?

Read the posts above yours.

I did, but it does not say where she lives or if she is married and the links do not say either. I think I heard she lives in CO?

Sorry. You're probably right about that. I believe she lives somewhere in the northwest. Our "Brasil Nut" probably has more info on that.

And, by the way, a hearty welcome to the A&M Corner Forum.

Thanks Harry. By the way, I was a member of this board back in 2002 -2003 but somehow I drifted away and when I came back, I couldn't remember my user name.

I am a huge Sergio fan and I was even blessed enough to see Sergio live about 6 or 7 years back here in Long Island at the IMAC center. He performed with Graciano and there was another singer too. I remember waiting until everyone left in hopes that he would come out and sure enough, a limo pulled up in the front and took Sergio and Graciano along with the owners of the place to dinner. I got to say hi and shake his hand. He is such a nice guy.

Janis and her husband live in L.A. I've emailed quite a bit with both of them. In fact they were sweet enough to send me a complete set of their Bible Adventure series which I donated to the church I worked for then.

 I find it very odd or a flat out lie that Sergio would make the group stay in fleabags while he was at the Ritz. This seems to go against the "spirit" of A&M Records. Especially since they toured quite a bit with Herb & The TJB.

Did Herb make the rest of the band stay in fleabags while he was at the Four Seasons?

I also find it very suspicious that "Lana" was fired and then begged for her job back.

I mean really, if you are going to make such inflammatory claims here, surely you must provide us with some links to these claims.

I am very surprised that none of the regulars or mods have asked for more clarification. Especially from such a "newer" member with very few posts.

It would be cool to see an authentic Brasil '66 reunion with Lani and Janis and or Karen and the original guys if they're still kickin'- just for one show, just for fun...

That is all more or less verbatim from the liner notes of the expanded Carnival release. I can tell you from having spoken to Janis that from her perspective it's true. That said, I don't think she ever used the term "fleabags."

I can see the group having to stay in less-fancy hotels. Lots of musicians do that....in 1999 I saw Alan Parsons and his band in Seattle. We checked all over town, even at the fanciest hotels, trying to find a room and finally had to settle for this dumpy (but clean) hotel in a semi-bad part of town. Imagine our surprise when, in the lobby the next morning, we ran into the entire Alan Parsons band checking out -- and they were carrying their own luggage to a rented van outside.

For budgetary reasons, it should probably not be too unusual for, nowadays, most famous people to stay at less-than-substandard lodging...

Especially for the most-rabid fans staking out the Hiltons everywhere, just to find some $2, per night 'el cheap-o' hot sheets motor inn to be where they're actually staying at... --Besides, they need the money, (& piece of the fame) too...!

(Throws some people off the track, don't it?!)

It's hard to convert it into 1960s era dollars, but let's just do the math using today's bucks.

Let's say you've got a touring group of 15 people (musicians, road crew). Putting everybody up in a $300 per night hotel (which these days buys you a nice hotel room, but by no means opulence) is $4500 a night.

Even if you make the road crew stay at Motel 6, a six-person group of performers is $1800 a night. Do that for a month and your tab is $54,000. That'll help eat the tour profits in a big hurry.

I have a friend who has been a tour manager for numerous bigger acts for almost 25 years now and over drinks last night I asked him about this very topic. Here is his answer:

"I can't speak for a A&M artists tour, though I would think that Brasil 66 was pretty big act back in the day, in today's world the promoter pretty much pays for the accommodations above the guarantee for the band & musicians."

"Even today it is not uncommon for Donald & Walter (Steely Dan) to stay in a top-tier hotel while the band may stay on-site (like a casino show) or in a less expensive hotel. Though the sh*t holes usually happen in Europe."

"The promoter does not usually pay for "travel/off days" accommodations. That is very rare."

I wonder if Janice was referring to European Brasil '66 tours?

So what about the story of Lani being fired then begging for her job back?
Is this true?
