Just wanted to comment that some stations are offering this package at different prices. I was able to order from WHRO (Norfolk, VA) the DVD and CD set for $144.
But there were others that had the same for as much as $212.
I used to live in the Norfolk, VA area; that is why I just happened to look up their gift donation.
Congrats James for getting your set.
So excited my show starts in 10 mins....
BREAKING NEWS!! I AM WEAK, SO WEAK. I FINALLY GAVE IN...
So here I was tonight watching the PBS special, and I had to make that donation and buy that CD package! My original plan was not to buy this package because I reasoned that I already had every song featured, but (1) I've bought other compilations that duplicated my collection of songs, and (2) I've been reading all the glowing reviews here of the CD set and its packaging. So count me in as someone who couldn't resist this set, once I saw the TV program. I'm sure I'll be happy with this decision.
I'm not sure how all the broadcasts did this but on my broadcast last night they showed Richard twice and both times only briefly on video (it looked pre-recorded from a PBS studio) and both times he spoke only lasted about 1 min so maybe 2 or 3 mins tops and he was not shown the entire time while he talked it was overlayed with photos so he appeared on video maybe 1 min total in both segments. The 2 times he spoke it was basically to help callers make pledges and support PBS, he did not mention the gifts. I found it kinda odd that he would not have mentioned the Singles Set and how it was put together just for this event or something about the Singles set but on my broadcast he did not mention any of the Carpenters gifts being offered. This made me wonder if this was a current appearance by Richard or was this recorded years earlier on prior appearance. I really am not sure. I was hoping for maybe a live call in or some kind of tie in from him to these newly released gifts (the Singles Collection and newly expanded DVD)
Still, I'm happy to have purchased the set by early advance.
LOL! That's awesome!Orlando is rerunning the show in prime time on this Sunday evening.
And I note that Amazon has two Carpenters entries in their top sellers. At the moment, CHRISTMAS PORTRAIT is sitting at number 31 and GOLD is at 56 - in all of music.
In many cases, this is actually more of a business strategy than an artistic one. The b-sides of singles are often used as way to generate songwriting royalties if the artist didn't write the a-side. That's been a standard practice in the business forever and even has a slang term that I can't remember off the top of my head ("free riding" or something like that).
Good grief. I forgot to watch it.

...I wonder what kind of numbers the stations did with this set.
