Just a bit of trivia here: on this date in 1980 President Jimmy Carter decides that the U.S. athletes will not participate in the Summer Olympics in Moscow as part of a boycott for the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Politics aside, this was a bummer for Herb Alpert fans who had hoped to hear Herb's "1980" repeatedly on the NBC telecast of the Summer Games. I had always wondered "what if" there was no boycott (or invasion) and how that may have brought even more attention to Herb's return to the top of the charts with Rise.
I always loved "1980". It was just a well-produced tune, with all the synthesizer stuff going on in the background. I used to always crank this up with the headphones on.
