I'm fairly sure this was Blakey's last recording. When his death was announced on TV news this album's cover photo was shown. Prior to the opening track is a clip of the Master giving his players a lecture on how jazz should be played.

The Jazz Messengers were always a training ground for future jazz stars, and this album was no exception. Keezer's incredible piano skills were showcased, and they were considerable for a guy barely in his early 20s.

A great final statement and worth seeking out.

Blakey died on October 16, 1990, so this probably was his last studio recording. Just think of all the great talent that went through Blakey's bands: Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Freddie Hubbard, Chuck Mangione, Woody Shaw, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and so on. Bu was not only a great musician but also a great teacher on how jazz is supposed to be played.

Just a few weeks prior to this recording,Blakey participated in an all star New Orleans flavored recording called BLUESIANA TRIANGLE with Dr. John and Fathead Newman(Windham Hill Jazz-WT-0125). A fairly successful recording artistically and commercially,a follow up recorded in 1991 included Will Calhoun(of Living Colour and Herb Alpert's COLORS fame)doing an extended drum solo in tribute to Art. This is a dynamite album! Blakey was still groovin' with the best of them when this came out. I really loved his chiding/encouraging his players prior to "Theme For Penny" about how jazz is played. It seems they got the message. Obviously, I enjoyed trombonist Steve Davis's playing on this album, although Javon Jackson and Geoffrey Keezer had several moments as well. I first heard "One For All" on Davis's solo album Dig Deep, so when I found this CD a couple of months ago my first reaction was "Hey, I know this tune!" Gotta love Blakey's drum solos on "Here We Go" and especially on "Logarhythms". One of my favorite jazz ballads is "Polkadots & Moonbeams", which is played uptempo on this album. This is a very solid bop album and worth looking for. 4 and 1/2 stars!
