This one's less straight-ahead jazz and more experimental than ART DECO. "Trumpet" and "Flute" are a bit pretentious and could be considered throwaways.

"When the Rain Comes," the album's centerpiece, has a simple and catchy melody that builds into something greater one layer at a time. Cherry's playing remains strong, compensating for the relatively weaker material he's working with.

This was his last album for A&M in his own name. Cherry did session work on Sun Ra's PURPLE NIGHT (CD 5324).

This is not that bad an album. In fact, there's a lot of little neat things going on here. It is experimental in a lot of ways, but there's also a keen sense of melody and rhythm as well. Don Cherry is a better trumpet player than I had given him credit for in the past. His muted solo on "Rhumba Multikulti" is very fluid. Some of his open horn solos remind me a bit of Hugh Masekela's sound. This is real evident on "Birdboy". I really enjoyed the songs featuring the Hieroglyphics Ensemble - you just gotta love that name. :D Some of the short pieces tend to get a bit much towards the end of the album, but overall this is a better album than I thought it would be. 3 & 1/2 stars from me.
