This is a rather uneven effort by Don Cherry. He seems to be all over the place stylistically. The better songs seem to be the ones that he usually doesn't do, such as the reggae-ish "Birdboy" (which is actually a neat little tune). I also enjoyed "Pettiford Bridge" quite a bit. There are occasions where it seems to take a while to get someplace, such as on "Until The Rain", which starts with a rather annoying vocal until the big band starts kicking in. Nice trombone solo by James Harvey! Other times it just gets a little weird, such as the poetry reading on "Multikulti Soothsayer", although the trumpet work is pretty good. This album just doesn't have a good flow to it, as did the more excellent Art Deco. 3 stars.
