A strong outing for bari master Gerry Mulligan. Unlike his previous A&M outing (The Age Of Steam) this album is a straight quartet recording of mainly Mulligan originals. The entire album is pretty solid, opening with the rollicking "Rico Apollo", the bluesy title track, then onward to the samba-ish "Ring Around The Star". One of my favorite tracks is "Curtains", with the swinging "Flying Scotsman" coming in a close second. Mulligan even gets a little humor in with "Good Fellow Thelonious". A solid album all around. 4 stars.

It's great to see this title has been reissued by Verve ('Originals') recently. There's no A&M label on the package, however.
