Christmas Portrait: original chart positions

The original LP was "certified" Gold, that is 500,000units, in January 1981.
Now, it was originally released October 1978.
By average Carpenters' standard, that is a fairly slow pace.....

Now, we get to one-million units RIAA certified by April 1998......
which, if I am reckoning properly, implies that
another 500,000copies
were sold between January 1981 and April 1998.......

By 1998 could that only be counting for cassette versions only, as the LP had been out-of-print since, what? 1991? Or was A&M lumping the sales of CPSE into their official totals as well?

I suspect that the sales of the Special Edition CD were included in the totals, as there was no other version of the album available by the mid-1990s.
