well so would everybody's here really (be different on a different day)
dave's already tried to sneak in a totally different secong list! :)

what if you had only ten to take with you to a desert island?

it's just a fun little game. they don't have to be etched in stone.

(that said, i know i could not live without herb alpert's ninth)

--Sorry, I couldn't help it; a good way to "end the last page" if you will...!

If you're actually conducting a survey you should make your "Poll" consist of EVERY SONG Herb ever made, if the A&M Corner "Add-A-Poll" Software really lets you do that...

I guess my First List is all that really counts, but if I were stranded on a Desert Island, I would definitely have to bring the stuff on the SECOND one...!

Dave

...Don't worry I won't try to sneak in a THIRD...! :neutral:inkshield:

heehee

this poll does consist of every song he ever did
all can be used.

but i'm taking care to include the order they are ranked as well

1. Bittersweet Samba
2. What Now My Love
3. Whipped Cream
4. Mexican Shuffle
5. Flamingo
6. A Taste of Honey
7. Casino Royale
8. Spanish Flea
9. It Was a Very Good Year
10. So What's New

Jeff

My favorite songs are a little off beat from most others, but, here goes anyway:

10. Stanger on the Shore
9. A-me-ri-ca
8. Quiereme Tal Como Soy
7. Pretty World
6. Tangerine
5.El Presidente
4. Thanks For The Memory
3. It Was A Very Good Year
2. If You Could Read My Mind

And, my all time favorite...

1. Girl Talk

Herb's version of this song is so laid back and relaxing... it makes me feel happy everytime I hear it. It takes me back to the '60s, driving around in the summertime, wearing cut-off shorts, opening a can of beer with a can opener... oh yeah!

I agree with choices pertaining to mood. The top ten I listed above a few weeks ago would be different (albeit slightly) than my choice today. Another facet, at least for me, is that at 52, my life experiences, have changed me and my musical tastes. At the age of 13 I would have chosen "Slick" and "Tijuana Taxi" but those two songs would not be in my first 20 picks today. I remember listening to “And the Angels Sing” at 15 and didn’t pay much attention to it – today I can’t get enough of the song.

I'm similar. I used to think that any song that wasn't "fast" was a yawner. Now I know better and some of the "slow" songs are among my favorites.

Sounds like someone's gettin' old.

walterphil: t's just a fun little game. they don't have to be etched in stone.

I certainly hope not. Okay, here's my Desert Island Ten, in ascending order of high points:

1. Lollipops and Roses
2. Spanish Flea
3. More and More Amor
4. The Sea Is My Soil
5. Memories of Madrid
6. South of the Border
7. Bo-Bo
8. Happy Hour
9. Up Cherry Street (SOTB version)
10. Green Peppers

Ask me again in a week, and my list would differ—but probably not by much.

1. A taste of honey
2. Tijuana Taxi
3. What now my love
4. Mexican road race
5. The happening
6. The sea is my soil
7. This guy's in love with you
8. Rise
9. Fandango
10. Beba

- greetings from the north -
Martin

Okay... I'll play...

In my current mood, today's top ten are (in order of release and allowing only one song from any LP):

Winds of Barcelona
Lollipops & Roses
Mae
Treasure of San Miguel
Girl Talk
Save The Sunlight
Carmine
Aranjuez
The Factory
Route 101

--Mr Bill

thanks mr. bill
i was waitin' for ya

it's no fun
unless the big guns play

another thing i'm personally using this list for
is to check out tunes i'm not so familiar with

Let's see, if I follow Mr. Bill's rule of one song per album, I might be able to get down to 10. [begins scratching head]

Just did a double check, with the exception of Warm, my list from a couple days ago was one song per album.

10. Stanger on the Shore (Keep Your Eye on Me)
9. A-me-ri-ca (Volume 2)
8. Quiereme Tal Como Soy (Fandango)
7. Pretty World (Warm)
6. Tangerine (Whipped Cream and Other Delights)
5. El Presidente (South of the Border)
4. Thanks For The Memory (Beat of the Brass)
3. It Was A Very Good Year (What Now My Love)
2. If You Could Read My Mind (Summertime)
1. Girl Talk (Warm)

Mike

One of the things this happy game reminds me is how many beautiful songs, beautifully arranged, may be found in the album Warm: "The Sea Is My Soil," Marjorine," "Girl Talk," "Pretty World," "Sandbox," Julius's title track, and others. To my ears, this is among the most "mature" of the TJB albums—not, mind you, that the others are "juvenile"—but I think visitors here will know what I mean. And the Shorty Rogers orchestrations are lush and wonderful.

If I have one hope for 2007, musically speaking, it is that this too often underestimated album may be reissued with the loving care we've seen in others. Surely it deserves it. I would buy passles of it and distibute them as gifts to everybody.

One song per album, that I can do (and did years ago!). I eliminated "A Quiet Tear" from the first album, and skipped the CHRISTMAS ALBUM and anything past WARM.

Here they are, whittled down to ten:

Winds Of Barcelona
Salud, Amor y Dinero
A Taste Of Honey
Mae
What Now My Love
For Carlos
Wade In The Water
Carmen
This Guy's In Love With You
The Sea Is My Soil

Harry

Though I love all the TJB hits, here in no particular order are the ones I always hit the repeat buttons on:

1. "Coney Island"(from "Coney Island")
-well produced infectious fun! Julius IS the man!
2. "The Sea Is My Soil"(from "Warm")
-gorgeous, simply takes me places.
3. "Darlin'"(from "Summertime")
-Herb does Brian Wilson, WOW!
4. "Up Cherry Street"(from "You Smile..")
-Frishberg's piano, and the jam session spirit just rock!
5. "Bud"(from "Ninth")
-emotional and beautiful.
6. "Town Without Pity"(from "Sounds Like..")
-Herb's a great arranger. The shouts from Nick are fun.
7. "Walk, Don't Run"(from "Going Places")
-The TJB could Rock!
8. "Slick"(from "Beat of The Brass")
-absolutely too cool!
9. "Fox Hunt"(from "You Smile..")
-so unique and never on a compilation-WHY?
10. "Strike Up The Band"(from "Summertime")
-either the opener or encore from an imaginary
TJB concert somewhere in my dreams.

Honorable mention:
"Got A Lot of Livin' To Do"(from "Sounds Like...")
-just love the arrangement.
"Milord"(from "Volume 2")
-strikes me as a perfect party song.
"AMERICA"(from "Volume 2)
-also on my TJB party album, if there was one.
"Love So Fine"(from "Ninth")
-Brian Wilson influenced, written by Wilson collaborators.

You guys have infected me, now I have to go do a CD for the car........

Sorry guys I didn't adhere to the one song per album policy in this thread. Since Herb and A&M never did on any of the compilations, I thought I could get away with it. The repetition and glaring omissions of the hits packages always bothered me.

Hope my rebellion here doesn't jeopardize my new Bronze status. Being a "new member" for three years was kinda fun though, glad to have moved up. When does my certificate "suitable for framing" come in the mail?

I do hope someone starts a Herb Top 10 for his solo albums soon.

nice list bullish
i like your comments

one song per album isn't mandatory
some guys just prefer it that way
(to help get organized)

my top 10 could not have only one from "herbie's 9th"
just no way (couldn't do without "a banda" & "love nest")

i do see a few have said that they could not put theirs in order
so i will have to tally them differently than i was planning

however, when all is said and done, it will still be an accurate representation of all of us here at this cool website

walty

we now have 24 completed lists
(yeah baby!)

not sure if i should tally them this week coming
or wait till after my 2 weeks vacation (will be gone fron jan 26 to feb 9)

i'll let you know
(i don't think anyone really cares when i end it, yes?)

by the way if anyone wishes to make a change in their lists
feel free to do so

i'll figure everything out in the end
