From the Seattle Post-Intelligencier:

A REAL "TASTE OF HONEY": Trumpeter Herb Alpert is best known for his 1965 Tijuana Brass album "Whipped Cream and Other Delights," where a seductive looking brunette is slathered in whipped cream (shaving cream, actually).

But Alpert -- an eight-time Grammy winner who founded A&M Records in 1962 -- also is a risk-taking technology investor.

Last week, Alpert received a nice reward when Emulex Corp. announced plans to buy Bothell-based Vixel for $310 million in cash.

One of the original Vixel investors, Alpert holds a 7 percent stake in the 12-year-old storage technology company. The $10-per-share cash offer -- a 17 percent premium over the previous day's closing price -- values Alpert's Vixel holdings at about $20 million.

Not bad for a guy who has sold more than 72 million albums.

Vixel's board is encouraging shareholders to approve the merger. But it is not clear which way the jazz trumpeter will blow his horn.
