As of August 16, 2005, the eighth Tijuana Brass album, SOUNDS LIKE, has been released on CD for the first time!

Place comments on the album here, and be sure to vote for your favorite track

"Treasure" is my all time favorite TJB song. "For Carlos" from SRO is 2nd.
JB

I voted for the familiarity of "Casino Royale", as my all-time favorite... A wise collaboration with A&M Label-Mate, Burt Bacharach and who knows what else those two great musical minds could have put together on another joint-collaboration song or ALBUM...

Dave

I have to agree with Dave here - "Casino Royale" is such a great record that it's almost the secondary title to the album. Notice how it's prominently displayed on the cover in the large font right under the album's title and artist.

Second for me would be "Wade In The Water" with "Treasure Of San Miguel" coming in third. Great album - and great to finally have on an official CD.

"Casino Royale." "Casino" is one of their more memorable hits(and, let's face it, better than most everything else about the movie!) "Wade" would come in #2....

:ed:

I don't see my favorite listed here. Dear Moderators: Please revise your polling options. For an LP, Sounds Like is already too short, as is!

Unfortunately, they may have to start over, since it's "Bo-Bo" that's missing, and that's the third track on Side 1....

:ed:

I tacked Bo-Bo onto the end of the poll...at least it's on there! :)

Wait till you hear the remastered "Casino Royale"- it is awesome. It sounds better than the original- they cleaned it up- I don't know- but it sounds like I've never heard. What a CD! (no pun intended!!!!!) :)

Wow...just wow.

I thought it was my imagination that "Casino Royale" sounds so good -- just because I wanted it to. Guess my ears aren't deceiving me.

"Wade in the Water" still gives me chills when I hear it. One of my all-time faves.

It's really hard for me to pick a favorite off this album. I love every cut almost equally. And I can't put into words how happy I was to pull off the cello wrap and put the CD into my player. I've waited for this for a LONG time.

Ooops! [grrr] how could I have left "Bo-Bo" out? It's one of my faves, too.

In my defense, I put those polls up at about 2:00 this morning and was falling asleep on my keyboard, but still.... an hour of listening to "the Mariachi Brass" as a penalty for me!

I've screwed up enough polls over the years...I know how!

That's one way!

but still.... an hour of listening to "the Mariachi Brass" as a penalty for me!

Jeez, I dunno...that seems a little excessive! :freak: :o

Maybe one side of a 50 Guitars Of Tommy Garrett Lp? :D

It's kinda nice to hear this album without the clicks and pops for a change! :D I don't hear anything major that sounds different, mostly subtle things as cymbals, some vibes work, and the percussive "trumpet farts" on "Gotta Lotta Livin' To Do" - which I voted as my favorite track, just edging out "Treasure of San Miguel" and "Wade In The Water". The cover photo seems to be a more faded blue than my LPs, and did you notice the dirt on the image of the original back cover? I've got cleaner covers than that!!! Still, it's nice to finally have this on CD!

So now I know the terminology for it...

One of the things I like best about "Wade in the Water" is the trumpet "comments" at the end.

Casino Royale is a very special track for several reasons - a Burt composition and the title tune of the movie soundtrack. But, my vote was for Wade In The Water, which was the first single from this album. You have the collaboration on the arrangement. It is 100% pure TJB and gets that great groove going that builds up to a spectacular finish. You just know that they were really grooving and had fun laying down those tracks!

did you notice the dirt on the image of the original back cover?

Yeah, Numero Cinco put up a gripe about that in one of his pre-release posts. I said (and still think) that they did it on purpose to give it that classic, nostalgic feel. If they'd wanted a clean copy, they could've gotten one from the same source they got the front image from.

"Trumpet farts"? Is that a technical term that I've been missing?

I suppose. If that's the case, then I'm delighted their quest for classic nostalgia didn't extend to all those LP pops and cracks.

I got both SOUNDS LIKE and HERB ALPERT's NINTH today. I will probably get BEAT tomorrow. But these were new ground so I had to have 'em right away. While sound quality is generally good on both discs, one thing I notice right away is that "9th" appears to have been recorded a bit louder than SL. Odd since the LP seems to be the opposite. I also think I hear a slight glitch or dropout on "Lady Godiva" between 30 and 40 seconds into the song. I hope others will take a listen and tell me if my imagination is playing tricks on me. Harry, You're a pretty reliable "second opinion". Also I miss on the vinyl version at the beginning of "Gotta Lotta Livin'" right before the song starts at loud volume, you can hear the echo of the studio for a second or two. The CD just goes into the song. It's a generally clean transfer, but I think not as detailed as "9th". "9th" is just a super transfer. The prescence is breathtaking. I agree with the Capt. about the pathetically faded look of the front cover, but then I think all of the cover art on these reissues lacks the vibrance and excitment of the LP covers and this is frustrating. Why wouldn't they have given these covers the almost "wet" vibrance the originals had? Also they should have put fresh looking reproductions of the rear covers on the back covers of the digi packs and the generic photos on the inside. Especially on BOTB. The disc labels should have mimicked the old LPs as closely as possible as well. If it sounds like I'm being nit-picky, I am because I love the original covers visually as much as I love the sound of the music. And I still can't believe they gave us the "naked" "Brasilia" on WNML. I haven't voted for favorite song yet, though I'll probably go with "Casino Royale" even though there are several worthy contenders. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give the sound quality of SL an 8. On artwork I'd give it a 5 for the crappy faded front cover picture and the soiled cheesy looking example of the back cover. On the music itself, a definite 10.

David,
glad to finally have this CD in his collection.........

A very tough album to tap a fave. But if drop-needle repetition counts for anything, then for me it has to be "Bo-Bo." It's the only track by any artist that I can listen to endlessly, while sober, that lulls me into a happy stupor without pouring a dram.

I'm very excited to have these 3 reissues - definitely some of my fave TJB stuff! "Town Without Pity" gets my vote - mainly because of Nick's drum beat that became one of his signatures (check out "My Favorite Things" for another example). Without getting too far off topic, I have a theory regarding the differences in sound quality between "Sounds Like" and "Ninth". As most of us know, many records were made on 4-track machines in the 60's (the TJB albums certainly were), but eventually 8-track became fairly common (my guess is around '65 or '66 although it existed before then). To my ears, there has always been a sonic "leap forward" with "Ninth" - even on vinyl. There is significantly less tape hiss than before - presumably because less bouncing was required (which would also increase clarity in the drums and the rhythm section in general). All of that to say, I'm guessing that in between sessions for "Sounds Like" and "Ninth", Gold Star acquired an 8-track machine which meant Herb had more tracks to create his multiple horn parts without having to bounce (or at least not as much). This is partly why this CD we now have (YEA!!!) sounds as good as it does. It is simply, I believe, a better recording sonically than some of those before it. Just a guess.

RE: Trp. farts...In high school we called them "kiss offs".
How far is this TJB series going to go? I know the Xmas will be coming, what about "Coney Island"? later.........Jay

...SOUNDS LIKE..., the new CD issue from Shout! Factory goes WAY beyond my expectations, sonically.

The songs on this album are as familiar to me as the back of my hand - they've been a part of my psyche for the last 38 years, with the great bulk of that, hearing them on vinyl. This is one of the albums that somehow missed out in the conversion to digital back in 1987, so most of the tracks sound fresher just without the clicks and pops I'm used to hearing, along with the faint rumble and swish noises that are inherent in vinyl.

So granted, the bulk of these tracks should be popping out at me in all of their new digital clarity. But with this release, it's the two tracks that HAVE been 'digitized' before that have my bottom jaw dragging on the floor in utter amazement. (A third, "Bo-Bo", appeared on an industry-only release from Rondor and it sounds about the same here.)

The two often-anthologized tracks, "Casino Royale" and "Wade In The Water" sound just amazing here. I thought that the DEF. HITS version of "Casino..." was pretty darn good when I first heard it (one of the high points of that release), but it's like a veil has been lifted. I don't own that old Colgems soundtrack album with this song on it, but a buddy of mine had it years ago, and I still recall the purity of the sound on that vinyl. (The CD release of the CASINO ROYALE soundtrack on Varese Sarabande in no way could even be classified as "good" - it's got a messy, garbly sound to it.) This new Shout! release brings back memories of that old Colgems album with the crisp highs, the exquisite stereo separation, and that feeling that we're listening to the true master (and that term could apply to Herb and Burt as well!).

Stupendous, wonderful, exhilarating, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious...I'm running out of adjectives...is the way I feel about "Wade In The Water". The last release I could find of this on CD was the old GREATEST HITS VOLUME 2 disc. On the new Shout! mastering, we get to FEEL Nick Ceroli's drums. He's HERE, in the room with us. On the old releases it sounds like he was in the next room. And it's not just Nick, but Julius and the rest of the gang. They're all HERE, and they sound better than ever.

Bravo, Herb! Bravo, Bernie Grundman! and Bravo, Shout! Factory! (I'm wearing out my exclamation mark key!)

Outstanding!

Harry
