Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme

Producer TJ Lubinsky has another terrific My Music special for PBS TV stations--this time featuring singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. It should be broadcast on most PBS stations in December 2023. I was fortunate to have heard them perform a number of times live in concert. They were simply top-notch pop vocalists--the likes of which we will never see again.

I am going to have to watch this one. I remember hearing them on the radio and seeing them on TV back in the day. My favorite duet is Every Time I Think of Real True Loving. I also liked very much Eydie's rendition of Touch The Wind. I heard it before Mocedades released it as Eres Tu. Once that came out, Touch The Wind was gone from the airwaves.

My favorite Steve Lawrence record is apparently a 45-only issue of the song "The Drifter" written by Roger Nichols and Paul Williams. Here's a nasty-sounding RCA 45, probably the mono side of a promo. I'd like to find this one someday. Eydie adds a little backing in the middle.

How well I remember the time and place--it was early 1963 and I was in 8th grade. On the Billboard Hot 100, Steve Lawrence's "Go Away Little GIrl"-- written by Goffin and King--went to #1. And Eydie Gorme's "Blame It on the Bossa Nova"-- written by Mann and Weil-- went to #7. From Eydie's album of the same name it featured her wonderful rendition of "One Note Samba." Without a doubt, my love and appreciation of Brazilian music began with her incredible Bossa Nova album, and then inevitable and logically lead to my deep appreciation of the music of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. In fact, in my lifetime, Steve & Eydie and Brasil 66 became my all- time musical favorites.

'My Music' series returns to WQED with 'Steve & Eydie: Memories of My Mom and Dad'

TJL---Thanks a million for producing the Steve & Eydie PBS special. I have ordered all the CDs and DVDs associated with their PBS pledge drive. What stands out was their mastery of all styles of popular Middle of the Road music, which included songs from the Brill Building, to Bossa Nova's, Spanish songs, Broadway show tunes, and the Great American Songbook. For me, in this regards they had no peer. And of course, they had a great sense of happiness and humor. For example, Steve's guest appearances on the Carol Burnett Show, and Eydie's many appearances on the Tonight Show. Her beauty, smile and laughter could light up a room. What priceless memories.

Two other My Music specials stand out--the one with Perry Como, and the other featuring music of the 1950s which included the McGuire Sisters. Wow--seeing the legendary McGuire Sisters featuring Phyllis gave me goose bumps. Kudos go out to you TJL for featuring them on what would be their last musical appearance.

I am certain that your My Music archive will become a significant resource for future pop music historians.

The special was not available in my area for the PBS that I can watch. Hopefully it will be on later.
It was listed for WUNDDT but that is actually broadcast for northeastern North Carolina and I do not pick it up in Norfolk.

I finally located a relatively clean copy of the Steve Lawrence version of "The Drifter". It was only ever released on a 45, (and you know how ugly an RCA 45 from that era can be!). This one was reasonably clean and I only had to use a light click-remover. It sounds better than the one I posted above.

I made a donation to PBS SoCal, and as a thank you gift I received a priceless DVD of the station's musical documentary of Steve & Eydie. The DVD also included Steve & Eydie's 1973 NBC TV special, which I fondly recall seeing back then. There were two highlights from the special for me--a Cole Porter medley, and Eydie singing in Spanish the famous Spanish bolero "Sabor a Mi" with Sergio Mendes and Brasil 77. The link below has a terrific interview of Eydie, as she recalls her days as an interpreter of Spanish songs.

I remember "Blame It On the Bossa Nova." But I can't say for sure that I remember "Go Away Little Girl" by Steve Lawrence anyway. But I didn't start by records until 1964. I know I saw them on Varity Shows in the '60s, And I think I saw Steve Lawrence on various TV shows. I think I just saw him on an episode of "Murder She Wrote."

I also remember them for another reason. They wrote the liner notes for Lesley Gore's LP: "California Nights."

Heck, I saw Steve Lawrence on a Carol Burnett show last evening on MeTV. He was a frequent guest on that show.
