Dear Forum Members,
During his Los Angeles period in 1970 Edu Lobo released the album ‘Sergio Mendes presents LOBO on A&M and later that year (in october 1970) he released a simular album ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ on the Brazilian label ELENCO.
Both albums were recorded in Los Angeles, ‘Sergio Mendes presents LOBO
was recorded at Sergio’s home studio and at A&M recording studio’s and ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ at the Record Plant.
The rhythm section at both albums was nearly the same;
Hermeto Pascoal on keyboards and flute and Claudio Slon on drums and Airto Moreira on percussion with the exception of Jose Marino at ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ on bass. And without the help of Oscar Castro Neves on guitar, and Gracinha Leporace on vocals.
All the songs on ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ are in Portuguese and ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ is the Portuguese version of the song ‘Even now’ on ‘Sergio Mendes presents LOBO. The songs Zanzibar and Casa Forte are also included in ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ and some highlights are the songs ‘Zum-Zum’, ‘Aquaverde’ and “Rancho de ano novo’.
Wanda de Sah or Wanda Sá, old lead singer of Sergio’s Brasil ’65 group and wive of Edu Lobo participated on one song, ‘Aquaverde’ and Cybele Freire (one of the sisters from the legendary Bossa Nova 4 sisters group Quarteto em Cy) and Regina Werneck appears on the track ‘Feira de Santarem’.
‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ a fine album from a versatile composer/singer/guitarist/arranger. One of Brasils finest artists.
Produced by the late Aloysio de Oliveira (12-30-1914-+ 2-20-1995).
Aloysio de Oliveira, producer, singer songwriter and founder of the Elenco label was as artistic director at EMI in charge of the 1959 release of João Gilbertos debut album ‘Chega de Saudade’.
In 1929 he joined the Banda de Lua who later was the band for the legendary Portuguese-born Brazilian superstar CARMEN MIRANDA (he had a short afair with her) and worked with her till her death in 1955. During the 1940’s he worked for Walt Disney writing soundtracks and creating the character Zé Carioca.
He co-wrote a number of songs with Antonio Carlos Jobim; ‘Dindi’, ‘So tinha de Ser com Você’ and ‘Innutíl Paisagem’ and others. In 1963 he married the singer Silvia Telles who died in a car accident, december 17th in 1966. The Jobim/de Oliveira song ‘DINDI’ was especially written for her.
All the best ,
