Dear Forum Members,

During his Los Angeles period in 1970 Edu Lobo released the album ‘Sergio Mendes presents LOBO on A&M and later that year (in october 1970) he released a simular album ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ on the Brazilian label ELENCO.

Both albums were recorded in Los Angeles, ‘Sergio Mendes presents LOBO
was recorded at Sergio’s home studio and at A&M recording studio’s and ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ at the Record Plant.

The rhythm section at both albums was nearly the same;
Hermeto Pascoal on keyboards and flute and Claudio Slon on drums and Airto Moreira on percussion with the exception of Jose Marino at ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ on bass. And without the help of Oscar Castro Neves on guitar, and Gracinha Leporace on vocals.

All the songs on ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ are in Portuguese and ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ is the Portuguese version of the song ‘Even now’ on ‘Sergio Mendes presents LOBO. The songs Zanzibar and Casa Forte are also included in ‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ and some highlights are the songs ‘Zum-Zum’, ‘Aquaverde’ and “Rancho de ano novo’.

Wanda de Sah or Wanda Sá, old lead singer of Sergio’s Brasil ’65 group and wive of Edu Lobo participated on one song, ‘Aquaverde’ and Cybele Freire (one of the sisters from the legendary Bossa Nova 4 sisters group Quarteto em Cy) and Regina Werneck appears on the track ‘Feira de Santarem’.

‘CANTIGA DE LONGE’ a fine album from a versatile composer/singer/guitarist/arranger. One of Brasils finest artists.

Produced by the late Aloysio de Oliveira (12-30-1914-+ 2-20-1995).
Aloysio de Oliveira, producer, singer songwriter and founder of the Elenco label was as artistic director at EMI in charge of the 1959 release of João Gilbertos debut album ‘Chega de Saudade’.
In 1929 he joined the Banda de Lua who later was the band for the legendary Portuguese-born Brazilian superstar CARMEN MIRANDA (he had a short afair with her) and worked with her till her death in 1955. During the 1940’s he worked for Walt Disney writing soundtracks and creating the character Zé Carioca.
He co-wrote a number of songs with Antonio Carlos Jobim; ‘Dindi’, ‘So tinha de Ser com Você’ and ‘Innutíl Paisagem’ and others. In 1963 he married the singer Silvia Telles who died in a car accident, december 17th in 1966. The Jobim/de Oliveira song ‘DINDI’ was especially written for her.

CANTIGA DE LONGE was released on CD on the PolyGram/Mercury label. I have the CD - it had been passed on to me from other forum members upon my delight at the A&M album. It really is a nice counterpart to the SERGIO MENDES PRESENTS... album.

Aloysio de Oliveira also produced Lani Hall's rare and excellent A BRAZILEIRA.

I was unaware of his contributions to Disney. Fascinating.

True.Alosio was married to Silvia Telles at one time. Later Aloysio married Cybele from Quarteto em Cy. Before her untimely tragic death, Silvia particpated in an all star group that included the following artists: Edu Lobo, Dom Salvador, Rosinha deValenca, Chico Batera, and Rubens Bassini.

Regina Werneck and Oscar C. Neves were also married for a time. Presently,Regina is married to Jose Marino.Regina Werneck also sung on Flora Purim's album Everday, Everynight in a chorus that included Flora Purim, yana Purim, Airto, Lani Hall,Oscar Castro Neves,Marcos Valle and a singer named Niura Band.

Niura Band is the daughter of Flora Purim and Dom Um Romao. Niura's godfather was Rubens Bassini. Flora and Airto's daughter Dianna Moriera Booker is a singer and teacher. She teaches vocals with Kevyn Lettau at The Los Angeles Music Academy. Dianna and her husband Krishna Booker front the band Eyedentity which includes Rashid Duke(son of keyboard master George Duke). Krishna is the son of jazz bassist Walter Booker, the nephew of Wayne Shorter, the godson of Herbie Hancock, and the stepson of singer Jon Lucien. Krishna's halfsister Dalilah Lucien died tragically in a plane crash with Wayne Shorter wife Ana Maria in 1996. Dalilah was only 17 years old. Another interesting note is that Ana Maria Booker and and her sister Maria Booker-Lucien were friends of Tina Turner's. The sisters introduced Tina to Buddhism and both sisters provided help and shelter for Tina when she was trying to break free from her abusive husband Ike Turner.

Wow, Cortnee; my head is spinning! That was an amazing unleashing of information in one short paragraph. I had no idea Flora and Dom had a child together, or were ever romantically involved. The only other bit of trivia related to all this (tragically) is that the plane crash Dalilah and Ana Maria died in was the famous TWA flight 800 of several years back...Also, Maria used to run a club called "Samba e Saudade" in LA for many years that featured a lot of local Brazilian bands, as well as bringing artists from Brazil in concert....

Regina also sang with Quarteto em Cy. For completists, there are two US Warner releases of Quarteto em Cy, under the name "Girls from Bahia," both with arrangements by Oscar. And Edu and Wanda's son Bena Lobo released a pretty good CD a few years ago, with cameos by his parents.

Regina Werneck and Oscar C. Neves were also married for a time. Presently,Regina is married to Jose Marino.Regina Werneck also sung on Flora Purim's album Everday, Everynight

Dear Cortnee,

I met in april 1971 in Bologna, Italy at a Childrens Book Fair
PAULA WERNECK-SALDANHA, a young lovely beautiful blond long-haired lady with brown eyes.
She was togehter with a group of Brazilian artists/illustrators and writers, headed by her mother, a famous artist/illustrator in Brazil at the time.

Is there a connecting between her and Regina Werneck?

All the best,
