Unique voice that is Karen

Not many pop songs start out with a vocal, from what I have experienced. Usually there is some type of instrumental intro. With Carpenters, they have done it more than a handful of times beginning with 'Invocation', then on hits such as 'Hurting Each Other' and 'Goodbye To Love'. Is this because of Karen's unique voice?

It's a striking way to start a record....Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" is another example of a dramatic use of vocal intro. Especially with a voice as distinctive as Karen's, it makes a great impact!
