Didn't the Small Circle of Friends do that song too?

Yes. I thought I said that when I listed Roger Nichols.

...too lazy, it appears, to type out the "Small Circle Of Friends", online...

OK this proves that I'm not getting enough sleep. When I wrote MY post, I actually typed "Roger Nichols" first but then I changed it to Small Circle of Friends because I thought that'd give more name recognition for the "casual reader." I guess I just didn't read down your list far enough.

I hope this year picks up steam soon -- not going too well so far! :D

Hey, and remember that were into page two of this thread and we're all talking about another song entirely!

B66 is my "default" version of the tune, but I enjoy (and voted for) Chris Montez's version. Hey, I support the underdog in these voteing things...

In an unusual turn of events, Mr. Bill gets the thread BACK on track...

:D

Beautiful song.

I voted for Dusty but the vote could've gone to any of the others 'cept Liza Minnelli, still never heard her version.

I have a very soft spot for Burt Bacharach's instrumental version from the "Casino Royale" OST and Claudine Longet's version too, but that's my problem ha ha...

Other favorite versions include Howard Roberts (beautifully measured), Stan Getz's take from "What The World Needs Now", Mario Castro Neves also did a great version of it, later in the 70's, but there's a great version by Roberto Delgado from the "Latino Dancing" LP. The rest of the LP might be a bit too cheezwhiz for comfort but the reading of "The Look Of Love" is special, check it out if you get the chance...

Oh and Happy New Year everyone, btw...

:?: At least it's not one of those threads someone else starts around here....

That's a fairly good Getz theme album IMHO. Well worth seeking out if you're a Bacharach fan, as it is quite accessible.

BTW, don't know if this has been mentioned before, but why was the song, which was up for an Oscar, performed by B66 at the awards ceremony rather than by Dusty, who performed it on the movie soundtrack (although I'm not complaining!)? I seem to recall that there was some comment about this by the media at the time (1967). Was it because B66's version was more of a commercial success, or that Burt Bacharach was under contract with A&M at that time.....?

My guess would be simple logistics. Even back in those days (before Ann Reinking was singing Phil Collins, LOL), it wasn't unusual to have acts not associated with soundtrack versions perform the best song nominees. Also, Sergio's version didn't chart until after the Oscars--it was in fact that Oscar performance that really put him on the Top 40 map for the first time.
