Hey all,

Give us a list of your desert island discs! I'm not putting a limit on how many you can list--just don't go overboard. I don't think we've done this in awhile, but feel free to list any recording, from any era (and any label, of course) to let us know what your other musical interest are. I know a lot of us here are unique in that we have very diverse musical tastes. And by all means, feel free to discuss your list and others' picks! Once I reboot into Windows (I'm in Ubuntu right now), I'll pull up my list of desert island discs and begin the proceedings.

So, let's have 'em!

Here's my current list, give or take a few:

Donald Fagen: The Nightfly
Pat Metheny: Secret Story
Steely Dan: Aja
The Police: Synchronicity
Miles Davis: Kind Of Blue
Michael Franks: Passionfruit
Matt Bianco: Matt’s Mood
Herb Alpert: Fandango
Peter Gabriel (Third album, aka "Melt")
George Duke: Brazilian Love Affair
Genesis: A Trick Of The Tail
Stevie Wonder: Innervisions
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Further Out
Brian Setzer ‘68 Comeback Special: Ignition!
Carpenters: A Song For You
Cal Tjader: Greatest Hits Vol. 1 & 2

Well, anyone who's seen the TV show LOST knows that not only can one get stranded on a desert island, but that they have record players there too! :)

The usual ground rule in these kind of threads is that Greatest Hits or compilation albums aren't permitted. That way, rather than seeing just what artists one likes, one can see specifically which of that artist's albums are a favorite. I'll use those rules, but Rudy didn't, so don't feel obligated to do so. With that caveat in place for me, let's see - off the top of my head...

WARM - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
FOOL ON THE HILL - Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66
OFFERING - Carpenters
WIDESCREEN - Rupert Holmes
A SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS - Roger Nichols &
MAIN COURSE - Bee Gees
MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR - Beatles
TALK ON CORNERS - Corrs
ARRIVAL - Abba
LANI - Lani Hall
PROMISES, PROMISES - Dionne Warwick
RESTA IN ASCOLTO - Laura Pausini
PLEASURES OF THE HARBOUR - Phil Ochs
VERONIQUE - Veronique
WAR OF THE WORLDS - Jeff Wayne
DAYS OF FUTURE PAST - Moody Blues

I'm probably forgetting something vital, but then I didn't have time to pack properly!

Who's these "Ridy" guy? :D

Actually, that's one of the questions I have - can we use box sets and/or homemade CD compilations? The answer to this would determine my list.

Indeed - given his recent adventures, hardly an appropos nickname!

You're free to use a list that contains compilations, although box sets might be stretching it. As for home-brew discs, I'd say we avoid those. I was looking at lists where any forum member could actually go out and purchase (or at least research) any of the titles listed. If you want to limit it to original albums, that's fine too...just make a note at the top of the list.

I don't have many compilations that would fall on my Desert Island list, but they're still "albums" I would not want to do without, even if I have all the tracks on the original albums (like the Tjader CD I listed above).

WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS -- HA&TJB
GOING PLACES -- HA&TJB
WARM -- HA&TJB
LOST TREASURES -- HA&TJB
HA&HM -- HA&HM
RISE -- HA
FOURSIDER -- JW&BMB
FOURSIDER -- SM&B66
TAPE FROM CALIFORNIA -- Phil Ochs
AMERICAN DREAM -- Emitt Rhodes
IRS 25th ANNIVERSAY BOX -- Various (Sorry -- I ned this Boxed set to be here)
SKAFISH -- Skafish
PSYCHEDELIC JUNGLE -- Cramps
ONLY A LAD -- Oingo Boingo
A DIFFERENT KIND OF TENSION/PTS 1,2,3 -- Buzzcocls
SUBURBAN LAWNS -- Suburban Lawns
GREATEST HITS -- Percy Faith & His Orchestra
DARE! -- Human League
GREATEST HITS -- Caprtain & Tennille
HISTORY NEVER REPEATS -- Split Enz

I had to include compilations to get the best songs by many of these, but in so doing I am forced to give up songs I love that were not hits. And my choices would vary depending on when you asked. Lots of stuff I like has been excluded, as can be expected from a collection of several thousand records/tapes/CDs...

Agreed...you can add more, of course (I had no limit on it, other than "keep it reasonable"), but it's hard to limit things down. I tend to lean toward LPs or CDs that I have pulled out regularly to listen to, over the years. And I know I missed a few by other favorites of mine.

Wow! This was really tough. I limited my list to 30 actual “discs” so double albums count as two. I felt compelled to go with mostly compilation albums to get the biggest “bang for the buck” so to speak. Sadly, this still leaves a huge chunk of my all-time favorite songs and many favorite artists out of the mix but I could “survive” with the just the following (alphabetically):

PETER ALLEN – The Very Best of Peter Allen
BEE GEES – For The Record: Their Greatest Hits (2 CD)
CAPTAIN & TENNILLE – Ultimate Collection
CARPENTERS – Gold: The 35th Anniversary Collection (2 CD)
JIM CROCE – Photographs and Memories: His Greatest Hits
THE 5TH DIMENSION – The Very Best of The 5th Dimension
FLEETWOOD MAC – The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac (2 CD)
JAN & DEAN – Surf City: The Legendary Masters Series
ELTON JOHN – Greatest Hits: 1970 – 2002 (2 CD)
CAROLE KING – Tapestry
CYNDI LAUPER – Twelve Deadly Cyns (UK Version)
JULIE LONDON – The Very Best of Julie London (2 CD)
MADONNA – The Immaculate Collection
MAMAS AND THE PAPAS – Greatest Hits
BARRY MANILOW – The Essential Barry Manilow (2 CD)
GEORGE MICHAEL – Twenty-Five (2 CD)
RICK NELSON – Greatest Hits
OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN – Gold (2 CD)
TONY ORLANDO AND DAWN – The Best of Tony Orlando and Dawn
HELEN REDDY – The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection
NANCY SINATRA – The Hit Years
VARIOUS ARTISTS - Grace of My Heart: Original Soundtrack Album

If using the “no compilations” rule, it would probably look something like this:

PETER ALLEN – Peter Allen, Continental American
CARPENTERS – Close To You, Carpenters, A Song For You, Voice Of The Heart
FLEETWOOD MAC – Fleetwood Mac, Rumours
ELTON JOHN – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy
CAROLE KING – Tapestry
CYNDI LAUPER – She’s So Unusual, Hat Full of Stars
JULIE LONDON – Julie Is Her Name, Around Midnight, At Home
MADONNA – Like A Virgin, Like A Prayer
MAMAS AND THE PAPAS – If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
GEORGE MICHAEL – Faith, Listen Without Prejudice, Older
TONY ORLANDO & DAWN – Dawn’s New Ragtime Follies
PARTRIDGE FAMILY – Sound Magazine
NANCY SINATRA – Movin’ With Nancy
NANCY SINATRA & LEE HAZLEWOOD – Nancy & Lee, Nancy & Lee Again
SOUNDTRACKS – Grace of My Heart, Grease, Xanadu

(Feel free to laugh! I can take it! LOL!) :)

This is kind of tough since my music mood tends to fluctuate slowly (I'll listen to the TJB for a week, then some hard rock for a couple of weeks, etc.) But limiting myself to one disk per artist, and not allowing homemade disks or Greatest-Hits type CDs, here goes:

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass: Warm (or Going Places, since Warm isn't actually available on CD)
Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Stillness
The Alan Parsons Project: The Turn of a Friendly Card

Toto: IV
Daryl Hall & John Oates: H2O (Even though my favorite song by them, Private Eyes, is on another album)
Led Zeppelin: IV

I've already added to this list once since I first posted it and probably would want to add a few more, but it's at 25 now so that's a good stopping point.

The Complete Works of The Tamba 4: We and The Sea, Samba Blim and their "Bonus" '45'...! :neutral:inkshield:

A little "bump" here for any of the newer members, or those who missed this on its first go-round. :D

One little side note: ever wish you could hear an artist talk about one of your favorite albums that they have recorded? Pat Metheny narrates two podcasts for "Secret Story" and a handful of other popular albums of his on his site, under the Music & Media/podcast link. http://www.patmetheny.com Really neat to hear how Pat envisioned and created the album and the songs on it. Wish more artists could do this.
