Hi, Sue
You are looking for 1976 Japan concert , not 1974. Right?
And probably the video you saw on YouTube was the Osaka 1976 concert.
Live in Osaka 1976 Concert
This is not a proffesional video. It was shot by just one camera.
Some staff of the show might have shot this show, just for the record.
Carpenters visited Japan 3 times (1972, 1974, and 1976).
1972 & 1974 concerts were broadcasted, but 1976 concert was not.
So, there are not any other video of the 1976 Japan concert.
"Live in Osaka 1976 Concert" is the only footage of 1976 Japan.
If you know "iOffer", you can find the DVD of this show.
The video quality of the DVD might be a little bit better than YouTube.
But, again, you cannot get a crystal claear video...
Well, I heard that you want a clear video.
Then here is another "official" DVD of the concerts.
Carpenters Live on Stage 1972-1974 NEW DVD
It looks like a bootleg DVD, but it's not. This is an "official" DVD.
The publisher "TC Entertainment" is a company in Japan, not a bootlegger.
The strange thing is, Richard is not involved with this DVD release!
This may be the case tomswift2002 wrote.
(DVD release does not need Richard's permission...)
Anyway, The video quality is superb, and still available.
But, you must remember one thing. This DVD is "Region 2".
You must get a "Region free DVD player", or set your PC drive to "Region 2".
If you don't understand what the "DVD Region" is, I do not recommend this DVD.
Carpenters did so many concerts in so many countries.
EVERY concert was recorded by Richard.
Some are proffesional recordings, but most of them were made by his cassete tape recorder.
Because Richard & Karen wanted to check the quality of EVERY performance.
When they came to Japan, they took a train to move.
On the train, they were listening to the last night concert on a cassete tape player.
And they had big warnings from the conducter, because they played too loud!
Those casette tapes are still kept in Richard's house.
You can see the picture of his cassete collection in this documentary.
(Note: the link in the thread is dead.
But, you can find by googling the Japanese title "アナザーストーリーズ 日本人が愛したカーペンターズ".)
NEW Japanese Documentary
You can see so many cassete tapes...
But, Richard has no interest of releasing them. Why?
I think that the studio recordings are only valuable for him.
And live recordings are just the copy of them.
So, there is no need to release the "copy".
Yes, Japan & UK live recordings were released.
It's because of the HUGE requests from the fans in Japan & UK.
This is just my thought.
