Ben Folds cites the Carpenters

In the May issue of Performing Songwriter, Ben Folds, talking about his musical influences, says "The album before that, Whatever and Ever Amen, I was listening to anything by the Carpenters."

What's more, that particular album, which was originally released in 1997, has been recently re-released in an expanded format with new liner notes and, in them, I'm told that Folds says the sound of one song, "Missing the War," is shaped by repeated listenings of "Close to You."
