Agreed, YOU SMILE was a pretty bland cover. As for BLOW YOUR OWN HORN, you hit the nail squarely on the head: Must've been for the ladies. I remember taking a stack of Herb's up-to-date solo material to high school in the mid-80s, and high school girls were going nuts over that one. Whatever.I've always been (and probably always will be, I guess) puzzled why Herb put "Tijuana Brass" on the Bullish cover. Maybe it was a logo they planned to use in the TJB days but never did? Maybe it was the marketing people telling him the TJB name would sell more records? Or is it just because the album has some of the harmony-trumpet sounds that hark back to the TJB days? I do like that cover, but I think the inside picture of Herb should have been on the outside somewhere.
The only solo cover I have always really disliked is Blow Your Own Horn. Maybe he did that shirtless thing for the ladies, I dunno. But my least favorite album cover of all of his covers is You Smile the Song Begins. That's just a very boring cover. (Definitive Hits is no great shakes either, but the Polygram marketing department probably had more to do with that one than Herb did.)
I agree about the Bullish cover being striking. It's about as close to having a logo (besides, of course, the iconic A&M logo).
Sign me up for a tshirt of the Bullish cover. Add a mouse pad to to those ideas!Rise would be my first choice (probably for sentimental reasons, since that was "my" first Herb Alpert album that wasn't my parents'). But it's still really an outstanding cover anyway.
After that I'd probably go with Magic Man, since as a trumpet nerd, I always like a good photo of a trumpet.
And Bullish is just a terrific design. I'd love a T-shirt of that. And a coffee mug. And a poster.
Main Event Live would also be great to have a poster of.
The sad thing today is that you could probably get very few of the original member signatures for it.I'm probably the only person in the world that has a framed Whipped Cream album — showing the back cover, where all seven bandmates signed it.
That is one valuable album cover! Congratulations!I'm probably the only person in the world that has a framed Whipped Cream album — showing the back cover, where all seven bandmates signed it.
