OK, you veterans of Ran's old Carpenters board will recall the field day we had with this one.
Listen to I Got Rhythm from the As Time Goes By album. On the final orchestra hit (at 4:37), there is most definitely an additional sound effect. To my ears, it's a belch.
(Ran agreed, and I see that he's since provided the possible source of said belch in his roadode.com clip of the Carpenters' Spike-Jones-esque version Close To You.)
I'm only partially embarrassed to admit that I actually wrote to Richard about this via his website. Of the three or so e-mails I sent on various subjects, this one was the only one that was never answered. Perhaps it's just one of life's great mysteries, but I'm curious whether it's an in-joke, a technical glitch, or some bizarre form of sabotage.
During our original forum discussion, I whipped up an exciting remix of said clip. For a limited time, it's available over here.
