My first unknown encounter with the talents of Alan Arkin came in my childhood in the 50s. Back then, when I heard what I thought was a nifty song on the radio, I'd beg my parents to find that record for me, and one day I must have heard Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)". My parents couldn't seem to locate that one, but they came home with one by The Tarriers. As it turned out, The Tarriers were a folk group formed by Alan Arkin and two buddies, and they's had a hit with "The Banana Boat Song". Their version combined the "Day-O" song with another Jamaican tune "Hill And Gully Rider". I used to own this very Glory Records single, now lost to the dustbin of history. But I do have the song on one of those compilations of old records. RIP, Mr. Arkin, who I later encountered through his acting. But this came first.
