For the longest time I had only heard Thad Jones in a big band setting. So this album was a bit of a departure at first. This is pretty much a laid back, straight-ahead blowing session. Thad pretty much just plays a muted trumpet on all tracks. He plays some pretty thoughtful lines on his solos, never really getting crazy and it works well in this setting. Of the two different groups that he fronts I naturally prefer the group on tracks 2-5, where the underrated Henry Coker appears on trombone, as does younger brother Elvin on drums. Thad's two compositions are the highlights of this album. A very nice album.
