I Know My First Name Is Stephen
You know, you have to wonder why Richard and A&M never let it be mentioned about how well the Carpenters did on the Adult Contemporary charts. I mean both Richard's "Something In Your Eyes" and Karen's "If I Had You" we're Top 20 A/C hits. Sure they weren't mainstream, but they did chart. You know there are some acts out there, like Alan Jackson, Jason Blaine, who have never or rarely hit the Hot 100 or 200, but the still hit high on the Country charts. You've got to wonder, if Karen had lived, would the Carpenters have still been getting hits in the 90's and 2000's, although not on the mainstream chart, but on the Adult Contemporary chart?
In the recent Tenessean interview, John Bettis mentioned that at a certain point in the early seventies, the Carpenters "had six number one hits". He could only have been referring to the A/C chart because we all know they didn't have six number ones on the Billboard chart.
