Bob, what's #11?

I'll beat him to the punch and wager it's probably "Freight Train Joe." But then again, I may be wrong and he'd say "Freight Train Joe."

I very much like most TJB songs, but I can list a few...

1. Talk To The Animals
2. The Trolley Song
3. With A Little Help From My Friends
4. Mein Belz Shetetele Belz - My Home Town
5. Limbo Rock
6. Peanuts
7. America
8. Milord
9. Magic Trumpet
10. I'm An Old Cow Hand

Since we're limited to ten, I'll not mention a couple others from the Brass Are Comin' album that are, IMO, very, very forgettable...

Crap. I thought it would be something like "Freight Train Joe".

Oh well...

Keep it up, and folks are going to think you don't like "Freight Train Joe"...

Please excuse me if I don't ask for your Top 50. :D

Hey, "Conjunction Junction (What's Your Function?)", Herb should'a done that...! :nut:

Dave :jester:

Close enough with Dave Frishberg being one of the key composers of this classic educational spot series... Of course, "Freight Train Joe" was from the previous TJB era than the one in which Frishberg assumed the (Lou) Paganistic duties...

1. All Herb Alpert vocals.
2. Probably all of the first two LPs.
3. Most of the X-mas LP
4. El Garbanzo - Butterball - Peanuts - Whipped Cream
5. Cinco De Mayo - Spanish Flea
6. Brasilia
7. Mame - Freight Train Joe
8. Miss Frenchy Brown
9. Flea Bag - Cowboys and Indians - Carmen - The Happening - Love So Fine
10. Monday, Monday - Talk To The Animals - Thanks For The Memory
11. Ob-La-Di...
12. About half of The Brass Are Comin' LP

Some surprises being listed here; I'm especially surprised to see "Spanish Flea" on a couple of lists. Outside of being over-played to the point of exhaustion, I still enjoy listening to the "tightness" of the band on this song. They just cook on it.

Another surprise from JO's list is "Monday, Monday" which is one of my top 10 TJB favorites. Herb's trumpeting on it is nothing special, but I really enjoy listening to the interplay between Bob Edmondson and Herb on this. In fact the whole BEAT album has some outstanding trombone work from Edmondson.

"LEAST" favorites? Hurts to do this, as I hate to criticize my all-time favorite musician. But I might be able to come up with a few. Let me see...

1. Talk To The Animals
(How cheesy can it get? I guess I'll start watching Barney!)
2. Sandbox (redundancy just simply annoys me)
3. Moon River (Sorry, Herb... This was just butchered, IMHO)
4. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow
(Good grief! How many wimpy choir vocals can we stand?!)
5. Without Her
(A quiet love ballad that BLASTS your ears every few seconds)
6. I Belong
(as w/ most of the CONEY ISLAND album, I think Herb was just ready to change musical directions at this point...)
7. Dida
(I don't know why... It just bores me to death. I know... I can't explain it any further)
8. Tijuana Sauerkraut (a la Talk To The Animals... )
9. Slick
(I just don't see what evrybody loves about this thing. Out in left field, and it just didn't fit the TJB)
10. I'll Never Fall In Love Again
(Sounds like Herb was half asleep when he did this... Should've let Lani handle the vocals!)

Other than these few I have listed, I can't think of too many TJB tracks which would be considered 'unbearable'. While I'm not fond of CONEY ISLAND, THE BRASS ARE COMIN', or THE CHRISTMAS ALBUM in their entirety, these are the songs I always skip over, without fail.

6. I Belong
Another favorite of mine! Dang!!

I would expect most people would list "This Guy" as their favorite Herb vocal, but "I Belong" has been mine for a while. I like the lyrics, and the ending three minutes blows me away every time.

I didn't include CONEY ISLAND or YOU SMILE-THE SONG BEGINS in my considerations of least-favorites...if I had, "Carmine" would have made the list. That's an always-skip for me.

Sorry, Mike -- but I did get Freight Train Joe in there.

Spanish Flea is OK -- but it gets boring really quick. I mean, 45" into the song and you've got the whole thing down. All that's left to do is play it over and over and over... This is a recurring problem with those "cute" songs, Brasilia being another one sorta like that. I find myself just waiting for the song to end after like 1 minute. On the other hand, The Sea is my Soil, which clocks in at like 4:30-something, always ends way too soon.

Monday, Monday is not good trumpet playing. In fact, if it wasn't for Bob it would be unlistenable. There is a strong beat for sure, but Nick, Pat and John do nothing with it -- no embellishments, no change-ups, no musical "thoughts and deeds" dropped here and there...they simply run on autopilot (just like they did on the A-section on With A Little Help...) I realize this was Herb's intention with these arrangments, but these are rare instances where I simply can't appreciate his ideas.
