Yeah, Benson had much more commercial appeal than the more mainstream jazz artists, so in that sense I can understand how well he did here in the States.
I had the pleasure of exchanging e-mails with JJ before he died and he loved going to Japan. He said the crowds were much bigger there and very enthusiastic, whereas the US clubs could get rather sparse and polite. Same thing when he was in Europe. I wish I would've saved those e-mails, but of course I had no idea that things would end the way they did.
