Jessica Simpson just performed the 80's ballad "Take My Breath Away" on the Oprah show. She could not even get through one line of that song without making her voice jump up and down, and moving her head side to side, waving her arm up to her face, etc.. Can't anyone just sing anything anymore? It's a shame because Jessica actually has a beautiful voice when she tones it down. A few years back her voice had shades of Olivia Newton John, especially when Jessica had sang the hit ballad, "Did You Ever Love Somebody" in the 90's. Now it's nothing but those annoying vocal affectations. This is becoming such the norm these days for a lot of young people to sing ballads this way, it makes me wonder if when they hear singers like Karen or Carly Simon, they must think that THEY sound weird.
Karen had such a beautiful, effortless yet distinctive style.
