I think, TIME was a step in a new direction, too. Listen to SAY YEAH or WHO DO YOU LOVE. This isn't Carpenter-esque at all, in my opinion.
CALLING YOUR NAME AGAIN and I'M STILL NOT OVER YOU are great songs. If Peter Cetera would have sung them, they could have been minor hits. But Richard just hasn't a good voice. There is something missing. Perhaps his voice is not masculine enough.
