For a song that originally clocked in at around 3:40 in its album version, this lengthy 12-inch single of "America" goes on for 18 minutes longer! What's the story? The album version fades out at what is the beginning of a lengthy studio jam with Prince and his band at the time, The Revolution. This single is notable as it is a document of what often happened in the studio when Prince was left to his own devices and the tape was left rolling. That the resulting jam itself is a side-long track is incredible. While musically it's not some stunning lost masterpiece, it is more a case of the musicians continuing what was already happening.
The B-side, "Girl," is another non-album cut, as was the tradition with Prince's singles at the time. The album Around the World in a Day is notable in that it was the first to follow the massively successful Purple Rain, and marked the debut of his own Warner-distributed label Paisley Park, which was also the name of his recording studio complex in the greater Minneapolis area.
