Back on topic (sort of anyway)...

I'd better check and see how much is in my piggy bank, before all these treasures are snapped up.

Here piggy piggy... there's someone here who would like to meet you. His name is Mister Hammer... Now, where did that pig go to?!

Thread cleaned up and irrelevant and inflammatory posts removed. Unfortunately, our new member's introductory post was lost in the shuffle, so I would ask him to re-introduce himself in another thread.

Those wishing to discuss the traditions, origins, and language of Christmas may start another thread in our Off-topic Forum.

I must describe the solo poster listed above:
It is from the KAREN CARPENTER solo album photo shoot.
Karen is wearing the same white outfit as on the VOTH cover. There were several shots of Karen photographed on a purple velvet armchair in various poses. This photo is NOT Karen posing w/feet tucked-in at armchair facing camera. Rather this shot is of Karen sitting sideways in velvet chair with feet in bright red socks dangling over one side and her head thrown back looking at camera. Stunning, beautifully rich in color, tone and Karen is radiant. It's official and states Karen Carpenter on A&M records etc...These came directly from the cd buyer of TOWER RECORDS Portland night before album release. At first perusal and only once have they seen the light of day.

Please private message your interests. I hope you enjoy safeguarding these keepsakes as much as I have. Many of these date back to the Downey Fan Club's inception. All items were obtained by me directly and have had no other handler. I cleared this sale format with the Administrator wishing to uphold forum etiquette.

Sincerely,

Jeff
I don't know how to PM, I'd love the red logo embossed vinyl notepad and white scarf if they are still available and also not sure about posting to the UK? Please OM back and maybe I'll pick it up.

Hi Nick,
Welcome!
Yes, white scarf and red np still available. So to PM go to the top right side of page click inbox, from there click "start conversation" and then enter djn in "participant" voila

Alright my friends, each of the current orders have been paid, filled, shipped and tracking #'s provided (save one for later mail). I'm anxiously waiting to hear feedback upon opening your packages. I'm very confidant your packaging is adequate for a special delivery. The antici.......pation is a beast of a bitch! I think I'm giddy....ya think?
This has really been fun and it's only just begun. Feel free to inquire about things not listed. Factory sealed cd's, some I have scads of and some just scads. Doesn't hurt to ask. I don't bite...everyone...on a good day that is.
There are music books and programs of yesterday, photos-n-stuff still looking for a loving home. These particular items are still marinating and I'm happy to entertain your reasonable suggestions here. Ah yes, solo posters too...a massive hit. Lotsa buzz kinda surprised me. But then again, it is Karen (IF I HAD YOU) Carpenter....so duh on me.

Off to watch SUNSET BOULEVARD on b-ray. Ahhhh, gotta love it.

Jeff

I was wondering how did the fan club memorabilia work? Did you have to pay a yearly fee? I know that newsletters went out each month but did they just list in the newsletters what was available to purchase or did they issue sheets out on the mail with pictures of what the items looked like to order? I have the newsletters in a word doc and I've noticed some months they will say...we still have some fan club such N such available to purchase.

I was reading one of the newsletters (the final letter) that said they found some Carpenters Made in America sun visors in the Yesterday Once More warehouse and were willing to sell them if you contacted them. I guess the fan club stuff was moved from their Newville home over to the YOM warehouse with Richard's auto's? Did Evelyn and Rosa mail out all the memorabilia or did another company handle all the shipping?

Sorry, I'm just curious since I was not apart of the club and wondered how it all worked. I'd love to read you posts about what it was like to have been apart of the Carpenters Fan Club.

Jeff, did you ever get any of those Carpenters belt buckles? I think I have only seen 1 and it's been so long I can't really remember what it looked like but it seemed to look heavy and well made if I remember correctly, C logo?
That would be a cool item to own if not for wearing than just for displaying it.

The set list started with HUSH, Don't Be Afraid, SSSmile,INTBIL, SING ( where I stood in for the screaming mimi's lala's. This was the audience participation segment so lala lala I did.) YOM, GREASE spoof, Superstar, Close To You medley, Don't Cry For Me Argentina ( where if I hadn't been sitting 4 feet from Karen as she sang this and heard her at the mic I never would've believed the performance live. It was impeccable!) Closing with WOJB.
Okay scurry backstage as indicated in letter...
A brief transcription of mtg K&R as noted directly following concert: (this is kinda embarrassing but WTH here goes)

K: now who am I supposed to be mtg?
J: UH, Karen, me
(grandma spins around to face Goddess)
J: OH GOD!
David Alley: are you Jeff?
J: yes
DA: Jeff, this is Karen...Karen, this is Jeff
J: hi
K: hi
( exquisite hand shake where one party trembled and the other...)
J: Karen, would you and Richard sign this for me please? (CarpenterS ANTHOLOGY music book)
DA: Richard, this is Jeff...Jeff this is Richard ( at 15 I was well aware of my proclivities and wheels spun trying to figure out how to bag this one...sorry, it's true )
J: hi
R: hi
( another handshake but this time with sweaty palms & that's all 'Im sayin )
J: Karen, UH ( I know I'm a linguist ) I came all the way from Portland to see the dinner show is there anyway we can see this evenings as well? Cuz tomorrow is sold out.
K: No, ( yep! she said it ) I don't have any control over that. Do you know the age restriction Rich? In Las Vegas we have little 3 year olds.
J: giving Richard the "eye" working any magic I had in my pocket.
R: I don't know the age.
J: well thanks, nice meeting you
K&R: you too Jeff!

As I turn to Grandma's purse for the camera I find her M.I.A and I don't mean the album. Old Grandma's scampered back to the slots so I scramble up the stairs ( dressing rooms were downstairs w/ K's immediately at foot of stairs and R's down the hall I spell. Believe me I had my bearings...just in case...) thru the kitchen of Harrah's (that was the way they lead me downstairs go figure) out into the casino where Grandma dear is talking to her foster daughter in Sacramento on a "pay phone"...(it was '78) I grab the ol bats purse gangsta style and make off with my Kodak Instamatic back thru the casino, thru the kitchen, down the stairs to find Karen's dressing room door closed (CLOSED?)

Sooooooooooooo,

down the hall I go (swagger, strut or swish pullin out all the stops)

KNOCK KNOCK on (guess who?) Richard's wide-open dressing room door which housed a female (hmmpf... gimme a minute chicklet thought I) and a Richard Carpenter smoking a MORE cigarette a 120 it twas. I boldly step in welcomed by a gracious smile.( incidentally, these dressing rooms are far more than a vanity mirror. They were like a large master suite )

J: Richard hi, remember me? I (duh) just met you a minute ago...
R: Jeff right?
J: yeah! Do you think I could get a picture of you and Karen and me? ( stalling...stalling ...draggin this out as long as my good sense would allow...I kinda felt predatory while open-eyed lookin for the "signal" that NEVER came
R: OH sure!

Here, the female leaves us momentarily. I think she sprinted down the hall. I musta been a big threat in al my youthful hotness.
Now, female returns in a flash with...
female: Karen signed this picture for you, she's in her nightgown.
R: I'll sign it
J: THANKS!!!

back down the hall I go ( useless to strut this direction ) where I stop and stand in Karen's now wide-open dressing room. Gawking accordingly I watch Karen in a cream gown with silk floor length robe looking ELEGANT. She's talking with a woman that has short blonde hair.
Here we go again:

J: UH, Karen...
K: Jeff, I already signed the picture...
J: no, that's not what I wanted...I know
K: oh, what I was just gonna say is I thought you wanted me to sign it when I already did. ( a little chilly here...not like down the way....but that coulda been hormonal )
J: I know you've probably heard this a thousand times BUT...I have two copies of all your albums and been in your fan club since 1971 and now I've been to three concerts.
K: (warming) Wow! You're a devoted fan aren't you? ( beaming at the revelation and acknowledgment)
J: K K K Karen, could I shake your hand? (squeezing in another shake while I had the chance)
K: (sweetly and endearing) sure...

we shake...eyes lock as if we both earmarked the occasion for posterity.

J: Thank you Karen, I really appreciate this....bye...
K: BYE! Thank You!! ( she thanked ME....)

I'm walking BACKWARDS to the stairs at the foot of her dressing room eavesdropping on the cluster of people inside...watching...staring and a long lingering goodbye.

Back up the stairs, thru the kitchen, thru the casino to a gambling Grandma who was F'in lucky she survived the night having disgraced my photo op. I'm not kidding I was agitated and helpless to do anything but growl...

Sooooooooo, there ya have it!
Parts embarrassing, parts cute as I remember that man/child of yesteryear. Intense to relive, my face is flushed and oooweeee. digging into my archives I've uncovered stuff like this transcript. This topics adventure continues sweetly/bittersweet.

Jeff, thanks so much for the personal memories of your meeting with Karen and Richard.
I am envious, no doubt. (In a good way, though).
But, also, thrilled to read your honest description/transcription of this encounter.
With the number of folks who have met Karen and Richard, and attended their concerts,
I would think that a "memories book" of all of those encounters would make fascinating
reading. It provides more insight into who they were as people, not just as entertainers--or,
as 'recording artists'.
Indeed, they possessed much more depth than the recordings (or promotional/LP pictures) can convey.
(This, also mentioned in one of the in-depth Carpenters' articles, though I forget which.)
From my own perspective, and having read (indeed, re-read) most of the extant interviews
and 'professional' writings regarding the duo, it seems to me that the entire picture is
still wanting.
Of course, in reality it is not my right to have to know everything about their lives.
And, as Richard has stated:
" I don't want the Carpenters to represent anything to anybody--except good music."
But, per the intro to the CBS Karen Carpenter Movie :
"If all you knew was the music, you only knew half of the story."
As Randy points out in his biography, there are still many questions and few answers.
As time progresses, I do reflect more on their lives (which, in the 1970's I would not have done).
And, again the sadness of missing that rare, unique Karen Carpenter, overwhelms the emotions.

Apologies for the long-winded posting!

Knock Knock….whose there? Carpenters Fan Club memorabilia has come to Florida to reside forever. I got not 1 but 2 Mr. Postman packages..Happy is the way I’m feeling…..

Upon glancing at the packages holding myself back from tearing them open (gently that is) I noticed a fluorescent Carpenters logo sticker on the outside of my package. Oh dear…yes Mr. Postman has delivered the goods. I notice all the little things, just me. I quickly got my scissors to cut out that C sticker from the outside package for even that was going to be a keepsake. :agree:

First package to open….I am greeted with an official Fan Club memo that says “A Member of the Fan Club”…well I didn’t pay my dues and I don’t have an official card pursue but I am feeling that I just stepped back in time and now really feel I’m apart of the club. The excitement is growing….I see my Made in America sun visor, I had forgot what this looked like (that was until this morning when I saw Nick’s spread layout on another post) however nothing like holding it in my own hands. This visor is lovely and much nicer than I had imagined, the quality abounds as does the condition, minty!! Then I see my playing cards with case that fits perfectly, took them out put in my hand this is amazing complete with logo again can you say mint? Then I see a Carpenters pencil and metallic gold ball point pen, simply incredible, the ball point pen is much nicer than I had expected, nice quality feel and regal looking complete with logo head shots of YOM, (how did they get all these details on such a small barrel)? Mint!! Then I see my black note pad complete with logo and headshot, so happy I got this, love it. I should have got the large one as well.

How can it get any better? Well, I’m making my way over to door #2 I mean package #2 and wait…..what is this I see….gold foil? lots of gold foil….gold foil huh? I don’t remember ordering something with gold foil…yet here it is waiting for me to hold it. I am tearing up because I don’t have this and I have been wanting this for quiet a while, I know this to be an import, not easy to find in this kind of condition. I know I know, what is it? Well it’s the The Singles 1974-1978 gold foil LP. I’m finally feeling in my hand what this is all about…I go to pull out the LP and see the original sleeve of which I have never seen, so cool to see the details and all their albums showing on this color insert, very nice touch, the LP is mint. I’ve already given it a spin on the ole record doctor machine and then on the turntable it goes.... it’s playing as we talk. I kid you not, this LP sounds amazing, incredible warmth, so cool to finally hear this on LP as I’ve had the CD for awhile but never the LP. I am beyond words and was not expecting this. That is not all….I look and see something else is stuck inside the LP goodies abound in secret places, oh yes…my sheet music for “I Need To Be In Love” this is yet again, mint. I do play piano (I’m not great but I play for myself and rarely in front of anyone much too shy this kid is for any Chris Play Carpenters performances..I’m no Richard… This is a welcome addition to my collection and one of my ultimate favorite songs by Karen.

Then I see another envelope that is waiting to be opened, it’s quite large and I pull out my Rolling Stones Carpenters Issue, I’m looking at this wrapped in plastic and preserved just for me. This one is minty mint, I’ve seen some pretty bad copies of this in the past and I’ve always wanted a mint copy for framing the cover and this is the one, perfect!!! I can’t take it fully out of wraps just yet….as this one will be framed and placed into my music room. When I look at this cover, Karen always makes me laugh.

Well folks….thanks for reading my post, I hope you can sense the excitement I feel of finally owning these Fan Club Keepsakes. What a day!!!!

Jeff, I can’t thank you enough for graciously opening your collection so that I may own these items for my collection. They will never part from this Carpenters fan. The added gold foil bonus that was unexpected is more than I can put into words. Your amazing!!

Thanks!!

Chris, I'm so tickled I could bust!!!
Enjoy and many thanks...many thanx.
Honestly, it's comforting to know the type of home you provide. That brings me perfect peace.

Jeff

And, regarding the press release(s), i.e., If I Were A Carpenter,
Richard Carpenter and Mathew Sweet never did get together on
the Tonight Show, and the David Letterman promo never materialized.
I wonder what became of those proposals?
Again, questions begging of clarity.

Jeff, thanks for everything.
It's Christmas (oops) in July: Nice to see some new memorabilia available,
and ,
I hereby express my heartfelt gratitude to a wonderful human being, in the person of Jeff.

Gosh Gary,
Between you and Chris I've got to see thru puddles at work. Too too kind. It appears I've presented a false image as in person I don't resemble myself at all.
Thank you, that's one of the nicest, kindest ever.
You're pretty swell too!
Jeff
